Cens-19004 Jun 1900 Three years after their marriage John and Laura were enumerated in Rich Valley District, Smyth County, Virginia, where they were boarding in the home of Joseph Sauders. Also present were their sons Mathew, age 1, and John, who was not quite 3 weeks old. John Sr. stated that he was working as a merchant.7
Cens-19004 Jun 1900  Oddly, John was enumerated the same day in his father's household, also in the Rich Valley district of the county. He was recorded as a married man but Laura and the children were not listed.8
Cens-191013 May 1910  By 1910 the family had migrated to California, where they were recorded farming that year in San Joaquin County. The census entry stated that John owned his farm (located at Linden Rd. and ___) and it was not mortgaged. John's 37 year old sister Rosa appears to have made the move from Virginia with them as she was also recorded in the household.9
Cens-19202 Jan 1920 The same family members were recorded in 1920, although the location of the family farm, while in Douglas township, was listed as Linden district. John was 60, Laura 52, Robert [Mathew Robert] 21 and Bradley [John Bradley] 19. John's sister Rosa was again present.10

Was this street in Linden, California named for John? It is near Cox and Harrison Streets (John's sister Lille Martha Ryburn married John Bell Cox and his cousin Mary Jane Buchanan married William H. Cox). The Harrison family was also present in Linden at an early date and intermarried with the Cox family.13
John and Laura's monument at Linden Cemetery (also for John's sisters Lillie and Rosa).
