Birth27 Oct 1853 William Patrick Carpenter was born on 27 Oct 1853 in Washington County, Virginia.3
Childhood William grew up on his parent's farm in the Glade Spring district of Washington County.
Cens-188028 Jun 1880  In 1880, shortly before his marriage, he was enumerated living with Charles W. Davis in the North fork district where he was working as a farm laborer.4
Marriage21 Sep 1880 He married Mary Alice Broughman, daughter of Samuel Broughman and Elizabeth D. Maiden, on 21 Sep 1880 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.5,6
Cens-190019 Jun 1900 William and Mary Alice lived in Washington County, Virginia in 1900, but they appear to have spent some time further south during the early years of their marriage, as their children were born in Tennessee.7
Cens-191018 Apr 1910 Sometime between 1900 and 1910 they made a much larger move, settling in Ft. Worth, Texas, where William worked as a carpenter. The 1910 census recorded that Mary was the mother of 3 children, but only the youngest, 14 year old son Leroy, was enumerated in Texas with them.8,9
William and Mary Alice had adopted Leory as a young child.10
William and Mary Alice's daughter and son-in-law (Ritchie and Thomas Barnes) also made the move to Texas, and were there by at least 1905 when their only child was born. However, Ritchie and Thomas did not remain in Texas, moving on to Oklahoma before 1910.
Migration1912 Around 1912-1913 William and Mary Alice also left Texas for Oklahoma. At about the same time their eldest son, Frank, and his wife Grace, who were living in West Virginia, joined them.11
Cens-192019 Jun 1920  Both couples settled on 6th Street in Oklahoma City.12
Somewhere in this time frame, William and Mary Alice, along with Ritchie and Bonnie, briefly returned to Virginia, possibly to help Frank and his family prepare for their move from West Virginia. A Carpenter family reunion was held in Virginia; a treasured photo records the event (see below).13
Cens-19302 Apr 1930 By 1930 William and Mary Alice had moved to 616 N. Laird Street in Oklahoma City. They reported that year that they owned their home and that it was valued at $2,500. One of the questions unique to that years census asked whether there was a radio in the home; the family replied that there was not.14
Death3 Jun 1935 William died on 3 Jun 1935 at age 81.3
