BirthCircaabt 1842/1843 Elizabeth D. Maiden was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, abt 1842/1843.3,1
Marriage20 Dec 1859 She married Samuel Broughman on 20 Dec 1859 in Tazewell, Claiborne County, Tennessee.4
Widowed25 Jul 1864  Elizabeth was widowed at the age of 22 when Samuel was killed during the Civil War.
She was the mother of a 2 year old daughter named Mary Alice. She was also 6 months pregnant.
Milit-Pens24 Jul 1865  One year after Samuel's death Elizabeth applied for a pension for herself and her 2 children. R.R. Butler of Knoxville, Tennessee served as her attorney.5
ChildDeath26 Aug 1865  However a month later Elizabeth's infant son Samuel died and was buried with his father.5
Death11 Sep 1865  And 16 days later, on Sept. 11, 1865, Elizabeth also died and was buried next to her husband and son.5
Because Elizabeth and Samuel lived in East Tennessee, which largely remained loyal to the Union, Samuel joined the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. This must have been extremely difficult for Elizabeth whose family across the border in Virginia were all Confederate supporters. Her brother William fought for the Confederacy, as did several uncles and cousins . Even her father served as a Confederate guard. Ironically, after Elizabeth's death, it was her family in Virginia who raised her daughter Mary Alice.

Research Comment:

The Maiden Family of Virginia and Allied Families states that Samuel had been previously married to Elizabeth's older sister Mary Ann and that Mary Ann, not Elizabeth was the mother of Mary Alice. No documentation is given for this claim and it is inconsistent with the marriage and pension data cited above.
