| | Because Elizabeth and Samuel lived in East Tennessee, which largely remained loyal to the Union, Samuel joined the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. This must have been extremely difficult for Elizabeth whose family across the border in Virginia were all Confederate supporters. Her brother William fought for the Confederacy, as did several uncles and cousins . Even her father served as a Confederate guard. Ironically, after Elizabeth's death, it was her family in Virginia who raised her daughter Mary Alice. |
