The exact circumstances of Samuel's death vary slightly in the various pension papers filed after his death. He was injured or killed at Walker's Ford on the Clinch River in Union County, Tennessee when his horse fell on him during a Cavalry charge to capture an escaping Rebel. It appears Samuel's unit had been captured by Confederate forces and he was part of a guard detail. The location is also described as 6 miles southeast of Tazewell on the State Rd. at Claiborne Co., Tennessee. Other records say he died at Thorn Hill in Claiborne County. Since at least one record states that he was injured on the 24th and died on the 25th it is possible he was injured at one of the above locations and died at another.4
