Fred was 22 and Pearl was 16. Fred worked as a farm laborer and the couple rented their home for $5 a month. Boarding with them was 35 year old James Sproles who worked on road construction.4 |
| | Later Fred went to work in the Bishop Coal Mine under the mountains of McDowell Co., West Virginia and Tazewell Co. Virginia. His son Hal joined him as did his son-in-law, Jack Garland. However all three men eventually lost their lives in the mine, Hal at age 20 in 1951, Jack at age 33 in 1958, and Fred in 1961. |
