Father(?) Clark
Birth3 May 1832 Nancy G. Clark was born on 3 May 1832 in Virginia.3
Marriage13 Dec 1847 She married William Hutton, son of Dickson Hutton and Elizabeth McCready, on 13 Dec 1847.4
Migration Nancy and William migrated from Washington County, Virginia to Greene County, Tennessee, in the early 1850s. They bought 200 acres in the Bright Hope area.5
Cens-185022 Sep 1850  Their land was valued at $1,000 in 1850. The household included 21 year old William and 18 year old Nancy as well as their infant daughter Ann.6
Cens-18602 Jun 1860  Five sons joined the family between 1850 and 1860. The farm increased in value to $3,000 and William owned personal property worth $500.7
William served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was captured on May 30th 1864 and held prisoner at Camp Morton in Indiana for just shy of a year. It is difficult to imagine how challenging this time must have been for Nancy who had 8 children at home. Her oldest son, William, who must have helped run the farm in his father's absence, was 13 when William Sr. was captured. The youngest child, George, was less than 6 months old.8
Cens-188010 Jun 1880  Three more children were born after the war ended, bringing the total number of children born to the couple to eleven. Seven children were still at home in 1880. They included Jacob (25), James (21), Edward (19), George (17), Bell (18), Fanny (10) and Charles (9).9
Cens-190011 Jun 1900  Twenty years later only sons Edward [enumerated as Edgwood] and Charles still lived with their parents. William was 72; Nancy 68. Her entry indicated that she was the mother of 11 children, but only 9 were living.10
That number reflects the death in 1873 of daughter Ann, and the death in 1887 of son William.
Death17 Jun 1904 Nancy died on 17 Jun 1904 in Greene County at age 72.3
Burial She was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in Greene County, Tennessee.3

Research Comment:

Family tradition among Nancy's descendants states that her parents were William and Elizabeth Clark. A family Bible includes the notation that Elizabeth Clark died July 9, 1859. Nancy's 1880 and 1900 census enumerations state that both her father and mother were born in Virginia. Please contact me if you can identify this Clark family.
