Birth9 Jun 1827 William Hutton was born on 9 Jun 1827 in Washington County, Virginia, probably on his father's land on Hutton Creek.2
Fath-Death1835  William's father, Dickson/Dixon Hutton died in 1835 when William was 9 or 10 years old. His will left William's older half-brother Washington in charge of the family. William's mother was probably also deceased as she was not mentioned in Dixon's will. The will left Dixon's land to William and Washington jointly. It was the first tract of land their grandfather John Hutton acquired when he moved the family south from Pennsylvania in the early to mid 1780s.
Land-Sell3 Dec 1847  Both brothers sold their share of the land to their cousin Arthur Hutton who owned a large adjacent parcel he inherited from his father James.3
Marriage13 Dec 1847 William married Nancy G. Clark, daughter of (?) Clark, on 13 Dec 1847.4
Migration William and Nancy migrated from Washington County, Virginia to Greene County, Tennessee, in the early 1850s. They bought 200 acres in the Bright Hope area.5
Cens-185022 Sep 1850  Their land was valued at $1,000 in 1850. The household included 21 year old William and 18 year old Nancy as well as their infant daughter Ann.6
Cens-18602 Jun 1860  Five sons joined the family between 1850 and 1860. The farm increased in value to $3,000 and William owned personal property worth $500.7
Military  William served with Co. H. of the 39th/31st Regiment Tennessee Cavalry/Mounted Infantry (CSA) during the Civil War. He was captured at Greenville, Tennessee on May 30th, 1864 and held at the Union prison at Louisville, Kentucky until June 29th. From Louisville he was transferred to the prison at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana where he was held until May 16th, 1865. At the time of his release William was described as 6 feet, 1/2 inches tall with black hair and grey eyes.8
Cens-188010 Jun 1880  Three more children were born after the war ended, bringing the total number of children born to the couple to eleven. Seven children were still at home in 1880. They included Jacob (25), James (21), Edward (19), George (17), Bell (18), Fanny (10) and Charles (9).9
Cens-190011 Jun 1900  Twenty years later only sons Edward [enumerated as Edgwood] and Charles still lived with their parents. William was 72; Nancy 68. Her entry indicated that she was the mother of 11 children, but only 9 were living.10
That number reflects the death in 1873 of daughter Ann, and the death in 1887 of son William.
Death7 Apr 1908 William Sr. died on 7 Apr 1908 in Greene County at age 80.2
Burial He was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in Greenville, Greene County, Tennessee.2

Research Comment:

William's middle name is listed on many online trees as Dixon, however no source has been located that even uses the middle initial "D". His Civil War entries all use William W. or W.M; his headstone uses William Hutton, however Nancy's stone says, "wife of W.M. Hutton". William's great granddaughter, who has researched this family extensively, reports that his name appears in all records she has viewed (including a family Bible) as William, or Wm Hutton. The occasional use of W.M. (even on his wife's headstone) may have stemmed from a misreading of Wm.11
