Marriage1807 She married Moses Buchanan, son of Moses Buchanan, in 1807 in Washington County, Virginia.1,2 
  They were first cousins, once removed.  
Legatee  Moses wrote his will in October 1826. He died the following spring. The will left Joanna 1/3 of his estate except his negroes, plus a Negro woman named Sile_ or Lile_ (?). However the Negro woman died before Moses did and so Joanna renounced the terms of the will in favor of what the law allowed her. 
8 Apr 1827  When Moses died Joanna was left to care for their 8 children who ranged in age from just under 20 to about 1 year of age. Joanna was probably 37 years old at the time. 
Cens-185012 Sep 1850  By 1850, when the first federal census to enumerate all members of a household was taken, only 26 year old son Philip remained at home to help run the farm.5 
Will6 Feb 1858 Joanna wrote her will on 6 Feb 1858 in Washington County. She left the land on which she lived to Philip as well as the balance of her estate after paying $5.00 to the heirs of son Hestin [Hastings?] and the same to sons Mathew, John, James and Moses, and daughter Jane. She appointed son James Buchanan as her executor.6 
  The land was described as containing about 100 acres and lying between the ___ road and the South fork of the Holston River joining John Moore, John Buchanan and others. 
Death1861 Joanna died of diphtheria on the 8th of June (death register entry) or the 8th of July (headstone reading) 1861 in Washington County.4,7 
Burial She was buried at Moore Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
