Birth27 Jul 1812 John P. Buchanan was born on 27 Jul 1812 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Devisee8 Apr 1827  John's father died in April 1827. His will, written the previous year, left the portion of the family land containing the mill to John's older brothers Mathew and Hastin. John received the balance of his father's land which sat on both sides of the south fork of the Holston River. This was conditioned on John working the land until he was 21 and applying the profits to the support of the family.2
Marriage11 Dec 1833 He married Elizabeth Reid, daughter of Arthur Reid and Lucretia Keys, on 11 Dec 1833.1
Cens-185026 Sep 1850  John and Elizabeth were enumerated in Washington County in 1850, the first census to include all names in a household. John owned land valued at $2,000. Seven children were listed in the household: Leticia (16), Moses (12), Nancy E. (10), Arthur (8), Samuel (6), Thos (3), and Philip 1 month.4
Daughter Joanna had died at age 15 shortly before the census enumeration. Two additional daughters were born to John and Elizabeth after 1850: Martha in 1852 and Mary Isabel in 1855. However only two of John and Elizabeth's 10 children outlived their parents. Daughter Mary died at age 2 in 1854, daughter Lucretia died at age 24 of consumption in 1858. Five additional family members died between 1879 and 1891; cause of death records exist for 3 of them. All 3 died of consumption, including son Arthur, who died 8 days after his father in 1889.
Son Samuel left Virginia after the Civil War and settled in Illinois where he married and raised a family.5
Cens-188021 Jun 1880  The 1880 census clarified that John and Elizabeth lived in the Goodson District of Washington County. They were enumerated that year with Moses, 43, Nancy 40, Arthur 38, Thomas 33 and Mary 25.6
Also living in the household was 55 year old Esther Keys, recorded as John's cousin. They were related through their mothers who were both daughters of Mathew Buchanan and Elizabeth Edmison.
