Military24 Mar 1862  Arthur enlisted as a private in Co. F. of the 37th Virginia Infantry on March 24, 1862. However within 6 weeks he had been admitted to the hospital at Staunton, Virginia, following which he was sent home to recuperate. On Oct. 3, 1862 George Graham, Captain of Co. F., wrote Arthur's father a letter acknowledging Arthur's poor health and suggesting he apply for a certificate of disability. A few days later Arthur was examined by the Acting Post Surgeon. He was diagnosed with pulmonary consumption and discharged on Oct. 9th.5
Description  Arthur's Certificate of Disability described him as 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and sandy hair. He was 20 years old.5
24 Feb 1863  By Feb. 1863 Arthur must have recovered enough to consider rejoining the company. His brother Moses, who was already serving with Co. F., wrote Arthur a letter on that date advising Arthur on the clothing he should bring with him. Moses also asked Arthur to bring a "right smart snack". But Arthur apparently remained at home as Moses wrote him again in May and expressed concern for Arthur's health.6
Arthur was one of 10 children, many of whom suffered from consumption. Only one of Arthur's siblings married, the rest remained at home, and several died as young adults.
Death24 Apr 1889 Arthur died from consumption on 24 Apr 1889 in Washington County, Virginia.4,2
Burial He was buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Washington County.4
