Legatee22 Oct 1826  Moses Buchanan left Jane and her sisters Elizabeth and Margaret (and their brothers James and Philip) the balance of his estate after he gave his land to their brothers Hastings, Mathew and John. They were also to receive an equal share of income from the hiring out of their father's slaves.1 
Legatee6 Feb 1858  Jane's mother wrote her will over 30 years later. She left Jane and most of her siblings $5.00. The family farm was left to Jane's brother Philip who had not married but had remained on the farm with their mother.2

  1. [S618] Moses Buchanan will (exhibited 21 June 1827/ 17 Jul. 1827), Washington Co., Virginia, Will Book 5: 356. The will was written 22 Oct. 1826. It mentioned wife Joanna, sons Hastings, Mathew, John, James, Philip and daughters Margaret, Elizabeth and Jane (Buchanan); also brother William and youngest child Moses Campbell Buchanan. The witnesses were James Edmondson and Samuel Edmondson. As no executor was named Joanna Buchanan was appt administrix. She posted bond in the amt of $5,000 with William Buchanan, John Katron, Robert Keys and James Edmondson providing security.
