Birth13 Apr 1843 Elizabeth Katherine Alderson was born on 13 Apr 1843 in Washington County, Virginia.5,6
Marriage25 Dec 1862 She married Samuel Porter Edmondson, son of Andrew Edmondson and Rosanna Buchanan, on 25 Dec 1862 in Washington County.7,8
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  Elizabeth and Samuel provided a home for Samuel's mother after she was widowed [Samuel's father died in 1862]. In 1880 three generations were recorded living together: Samuel at age 39 was the head of the family; Elizabeth was 37. Their children were listed as: Andrew D. 16, Thomas J. 14, Charley Cole 9, Rosa A. 7, John B. 5, Sam'l G. 3; Mary 11/12, (b. June). Rosa Ann Edmondson was 63.9
Two other children, Lydia and William, had died in infancy and two more would be born after the 1880 census was recorded.
Cens-19001900  At the turn of the century Samuel and Elizabeth were recorded on their farm in the Holston District of Washington County. They had been married 38 years. Elizabeth's entry provided the information that she was the mother of 11 children, 9 of whom were living. Sons Thomas (34) and Samuel (22), both single, helped run the farm while their younger brothers Sidney and Henry still attended school.10
Cens-191018 Apr 1910  Ten years later the 3 younger boys had all left home; however Samuel and Elizabeth's daughter Mary Gentry had returned home with her 10 year old son Thomas and 9 year old daughter Rosa.11
Migration  In the years prior to 1910 several of Samuel and Elizabeth's children settled "out west", spending time in Oklahoma (Oklahoma Territory or Indian Territory) before moving on to New Mexico. Sons John and Sidney settled in Union County, New Mexico, while daughter Rose Fleming and her husband, who had initially lived in Hunt Co., Texas, remained in Oklahoma. In April 1911 Samuel and Elizabeth joined their sons in New Mexico.12,13
Land-Patent15 Sep 1914 Samuel homesteaded 324 acres of land in Union County which he received a patent for on September 15th 1914. The land comprised several parcels, most of which were located in Section 3 of Township 26N, Range 36E.14,15
Several of Samuel and Elizabeth's other children also moved to New Mexico after the 1910 census so that by 1920 sons Thomas, Charles, John, Sidney and Henry, as well as daughter Mary were all residing in Union County. Son Samuel spent some time in Oklahoma but returned to Tennessee and then Virginia. Son Andrew remained in Virginia and daughter Rosa remained in Oklahoma. Two of Samuel's nephews, Frank P. and Marion G. Edmondson (sons of Samuel's deceased brother John) settled in Union County during this time as well.
Cens-19203 Jan 1920  By 1920 Samuel and Elizabeth appear to have moved into the town of Clayton in Union County. They were enumerated living on Walnut Street in the household of their son Sidney who was a physician.16
Death27 Dec 1927 Elizabeth died on 27 Dec 1927 in Clayton, Union County, New Mexico, at age 84.4,5
Burial She was buried at Clayton Cemetery in Clayton, Union County, New Mexico.6

This was done to encourage development of lands that did not have a ready water source. In 1912, the residency requirement for homesteading was shortened from 5 to 3 years (source: E.
