Mother | Elizabeth Katherine Alderson1 b. 13 Apr 1843, d. 27 Dec 1927 |
Birth | 5 Feb 1877 | Samuel Graham Edmondson was born in Virginia, probably on 5 Feb 1877 although the 1900 census listed his birth data as May 1878.2,3,1 |
Marriage | 2 Sep 1903 | He married Mary Martin on 2 Sep 1903 in Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri.2 |
Migration | Mary was originally from Missouri. At this time I do not know how or where the couple met. But following their marriage in Missouri Samuel and Mary migrated to Pittsburg County, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), where their first daughter was born in 1906. Several of John's siblings also spent a few years in Oklahoma around the time of statehood in 1907. Samuel's sister Rosa and her husband lived in Comanche (later Tillman) County in the former Comanche territory. But Samuel and Mary's eldest daughter, Sarah, was born on what had been Choctaw land and was still considered Indian Territory in 1906. Whereas most of his family ventured on to New Mexico before 1910 (including Samuel's parents), Samuel and Mary moved back east. | |
Cens-1910 | 22 Apr 1910 | There they were recorded in April 1910 living in Bristol, Sullivan County, Tennessee. The household consisted of Samuel (29), May (29), Sarah J. (4. b. Indian Territory), Mary (2+, b. TN), Susan Martin (63, boarder, marriage #2, marr 19 yrs, no children), Edith McCowan (boarder, 16, b. CA), and Lucy Edmondson (servant, 25, wid, black) and her children. Samuel worked as a clerk in a lumber yard.4 |
Cens-1920 | 21 Jan 1920 | By 1920 Samuel and Mary had moved a few miles north, settling in Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. Two additional children had been born in the intervening years: son Samuel and daughter Rosella. The other individuals recorded with the family in 1910 were no longer present. Samuel's occupation was recorded as "lumberman at saw mill". The family residence was at #24 Wall Street in Abingdon.5 |
Cens-1930 | 12 Apr 1930 | The 1930 census found the family living on Bradley Street in Abingdon where they owned a home valued at $4,500. Besides the couple's two youngest children, the household included Cordelia Martin (57, b. VA, mother-in-law) and Gertrude Hillenberger (42, roomer). Both women were public school teachers, as was Samuel.6 |
