Birth | 8 Feb 1817 | Rosanna Buchanan was born on 8 Feb 1817.3 |
Marriage | 14 Dec 1837 | She married Andrew Edmondson, son of John Edmondson and Martha Moore, on 14 Dec 1837 in Washington County, Virginia.4,5 |
| | Rosanna was 20; Andrew was 36. |
Cens-1840 | 1840 | In 1840 Andrew was enumerated as the head of his household. Although the other members of the family were not named, tallies in various age columns suggest the presence of Andrew and Rosanna, their son John, and Andrew's 2 daughters from his first marriage.6 |
Legatee | 20 May 1844 | Rosanna's father included her in his will written in May 1844. She was to receive $50 from Russell Buchanan who inherited their father's land. Rosanna was listed in the will as "Rosan R. Edmondson, wife of Andrew Edmondson."2 |
Cens-1850 | 13 Sep 1850 | The 1850 census provided a clearer picture of the family since all household members were named. Andrew's two daughters from his first marriage had married and hence were not present. Andrew was listed as "Capt. A. Edmondson". Besides Rosanna (enumerated as "Rosa") the family included John 11, Samuel 10, Margaret 7, Harriet 6, and S. [Sarah] Florence, 2. Andrew's 70 year old mother, Martha Edmondson, lived next door where she owned land worth $1,200.7 |
Cens-1860 | 7 Aug 1860 | By 1860 the 2 households were combined. Andrew now reported that he owned land valued at $10,000 and personal property valued at $4,000; the post office address on the census was listed as "Liberty Hall."8 |
Widowed | Jan 1862 | Rosanna was widowed in January 1862. Andrew's will left her the use of the land on which the couple had been living, along with all the associated household furniture and farming equipment. She was also left another tract of land as well as a Negro named Charles. Rosa was to use this to the benefit of the family. She was left with the responsibility for their 8 children, who ranged in age from 23 to under 4.9 |
| | Not only was Rosanna widowed at a young age, she outlived many of her children and grandchildren. Several grandchildren died in the 1860s through early 1880s, probably from the childhood diseases common at the time. Rosanna's youngest daughter, Martha, also appears to have died during this period. Then in early 1890 Rosanna's son John died at age 51. Two of John's children died as infants; six died in the 1890s; the cause of death for 4 of them was recorded. They all died of consumption. In 1892 Rosanna's daughter Rosa Miriam Clark died of consumption at age 41, shortly after giving birth to twins (who only lived a short time). Rosanna's daughter Margaret Reed, who had lost 3 children in the 1870s-1880s, also lost 3 children in their 20s during the 1890s. The cause of death was recorded in only one case and again it was consumption. |
Heir | 1879 | Rosa A. Edmondson was listed as an heir in the 1879 settlement of her uncles, Robert, James and Mathew Buchanan. Rosa received $615.00 which was consistent with the shares received by her cousins.10 |
| | Rosa inherited from the Buchanan brothers through the line of the men's deceased sister, Margaret Buchanan Buchanan (Rosa's mother).11 |
Will | 24 Jan 1894 | Rosanna's will mentioned the widow and children of her son John B. Edmondson. It also listed her daughters Margaret A. Reed, Florence Alderson and the children of Mariam Clark and Samuel P. Edmondson. She left to Harriet C. Buchanan the proceeds of a note of $100 held on Harriet's husband, S.E. Buchanan. In addition she left to her son Andrew F. Edmondson the proceeds of a note of $148 held on William McRyburn deceased. Rose bequeathed to her granddaughters Rose Clark and Mar_ (underline not clear) Edmondson each one bed. Son Samuel P. Edmondson received a bureau as did daughter-in-law Mary J. Edmondson.12 |
Death | 15 Nov 1894 | Rosanna died on 15 Nov 1894 at age 77.3 |
Burial | | She was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3 |
