FatherJohn Edmondson1 b. 1774, d. bef 28 Mar 1836
MotherMartha Moore b. 25 Jan 1780
Birth13 Jan 1801 Andrew Edmondson was born on 13 Jan 1801.2
Marriage18 Nov 1819 He married first Martha "Patsy" Edmiston, daughter of Maj John Edmiston and Mary Buchanan, on 18 Nov 1819 in Washington County, Virginia.3
Like many other Washington County families, the various branches of the Edmondson/Edmiston clan are intertwined. Andrew Edmondson's sister Elizabeth Edmondson married another Andrew Edmondson/Edmiston who also happened to be the brother of Martha Edmiston, first wife of the subject of this narrative.
The repetitive use of the same given names also confuses the issue. For example Andrew's first wife Martha was known as Patsy. Andrew's sister Martha, who married Henry Horne, also was known as Patsy.
Widowed14 Dec 1827  Andrew's sister Elizabeth died in 1827. His wife Martha also died young, although the exact year is not confirmed. She appears to be present on the 1830 census, but other records state that she too died in 1827.4,5
8 Jan 1833  In January 1833 Andrew bought shares of his father-in-law John Edmiston's estate from 3 of Martha's siblings: William Edmiston, Jane Edmiston Rose, and Polly Edmiston Riggs of Warren Co. Tennessee. The land was in the Liberty Hall area of Washington County and bounded Samuel Hawthorn, William Moore, Francis Preston, and James Hand.6
Devisee29 Dec 1835  Three years later Andrew's father wrote his will and left Andrew a lot of land joining his old house and 5 acres of land on the river.1
Marriage14 Dec 1837 He married second Rosanna Buchanan, daughter of William Buchanan and Margaret Buchanan, on 14 Dec 1837 in Washington County, Virginia.7,8
Andrew was 36; Rosanna was 20.
Cens-18401840 In 1840 Andrew was enumerated as the head of his household. Although the other members of the family were not named, tallies in various age columns suggest the presence of Andrew and Rosanna, their son John, and Andrew's 2 daughters from his first marriage.9
Cens-185013 Sep 1850  The 1850 census provided a clearer picture of the family since all household members were named. Andrew's two daughters from his first marriage had married and hence were not present. Andrew was listed as "Capt. A. Edmondson". Besides Rosanna (enumerated as "Rosa") the family included John 11, Samuel 10, Margaret 7, Harriet 6, and S. [Sarah] Florence, 2. Andrew's 70 year old mother, Martha Edmondson, lived next door where she owned land worth $1,200.10
Cens-18607 Aug 1860 By 1860 the 2 households were combined. Andrew now reported that he owned land valued at $10,000 and personal property valued at $4,000; the post office address on the census was listed as "Liberty Hall."11
Cens-1860- Slave16 Aug 1860  The 1860 census also included a slave enumeration. Andrew was listed as the owner of one slave, a 24 year old male.12
Will22 Nov 1861 The following November Andrew wrote his will. He left his wife, "Rosa Ann" the land on which they were living which he referred to as the "Major John Edmondson tract". She was also to receive, during her natural life, a tract of land on the south side of the south fork of the Holston known as Ketchem's Branch. Rosa also received a variety of household and farming items which she was to use for the benefit of the family. After Rosa's death the home tract of land was to pass to Andrew's son Samuel P. Edmondson who was also to receive Andrew's interest in a tract of land on which Andrew's mother "had lately resided".

Other specific gifts included 130 acres to Andrew's daughter Elizabeth Blankenbeckler and a horse, saddle and bridle each to Andrew's grandchildren, Andrew E. Keys and Martha E. Keys. The balance of his lands and personal property was to be divided among the 8 children of his second marriage, all of whom he named in the will. Andrew named his son, John B. Edmondson, and Sampson Patterson as his executors.13
Death10 Jan 1862 Andrew died on 10 Jan 1862 at age 60.2
Burial He was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2
Will-Recd28 Jan 1862 His will was recorded in Washington County court on 28 Jan 1862.13
