Devisee13 Dec 1863  Mary "Polly" Montgomery, sister to James's mother Margaret, wrote her will in December, 1863. She left her land to her sister Jane. Upon Jane's death [which occurred in Dec. 1864] the land was to pass to James (son of Peter Clark).9
Marriage31 Aug 1872 James married Ann Eliza Blunt, daughter of William Blunt and Martha A. Snodgrass, on 31 Aug 1872 in Washington County.7
Fath-DeathJun 1880  James's father died in June 1880. His will, probated that September, left James his interest in a tract of land formerly belonging to Richard Montgomery. The will also noted that James already lived on the land.4
Cens-19007 Jun 1900  James and Ann were enumerated living in the Holston District of Washington County in 1900. Their household included 9 children who ranged in age from 26 to 10. The record also indicated that another child had been born to the couple but was no longer living. James listed himself as a farmer; his 2 eldest sons were working as farm laborers.10
Will5 Mar 1917  James wrote his will in early March 1917. He left Ann Eliza the use of all his real estate, as well as his household and kitchen furniture during her lifetime. He also divided his land among his children in the following manner: Emma and Martha received 26 acres each; C[harles] Tilden and Mary each received 16 acres; Ambler received 75 acres with the balance going to son Harry. In addition, C. Tilden and Mary received real estate near Glade Spring. The will also included additional gifts to other family members which Harry and Ambler were to pay from their share.11

Sons George and William also settled in the panhandle of Oklahoma. Daughters Martha Henrietta ("Etta") and Mary also spent a few years in Texas County. It is possible Emma did the same.
