Charles grew up on his parent's farm in the Holston district of Washington County. It is also possible that Charles spent some time in Oklahoma between 1900 and 1910 as a homestead patent was issued in the name of Charles T. Clark in Texas County on 3 March 1909. At least 2 of Charles's brothers homesteaded land in Texas County about the same time. If this record is for Charles he did not stay in Oklahoma as he was enumerated in his parent's household in Virginia in April 1910.4,5,6

Cens-192022 Jan 1920  Charles was again enumerated in his parent's household in 1920. He was 42 years old. Several of his siblings had not married and were also enumerated: Emma (41), Harry (37) and Ambler (29).7
Fath-Death31 Jul 1924  James Clark died in July 1924. His will, written in 1917, divided up his home tract among several of his children; C[harles] Tilden received 16 acres of this tract. However he also received a 1/2 share (along with his sister Mary) in all of James's real estate at or near Glade Spring. Charles (C. Tilden) was also named as his father's executor. The will specified that he did not have to provide security on his bond to execute the estate.
Cens-19301 May 1930  In 1930 Charles's brother Harry was listed as the head of the family which also included sisters Emma and Etta, as well as brother Ambler.8
