The 116 acres Mitchell purchased in 1821 was part of a 122 acre parcel settled by the Ebbing Spring Presbyterian Congregation around the time of the Revolutionary War. They built their first church on the site and established a burial ground. However in the 1790s the congregation was gifted land on the Old Stage Road where they built Old Glade Presbyterian Church. The original church acreage on the river was then owned by the Scott and Buchanan families before Williamson Johnston purchased it in 1818. Both the Buchanan to Johnston deed and the Johnston to Robinson deed noted the presence of the burial ground and excluded it from the transaction. The 6 acre parcel Mitchell added in 1833, which had also originally belonged to the church, was lush bottom land on the river. It too passed through several owners before Mitchell Robinson acquired it
