Marriage29 Apr 1845 He married Eliza Ann Edmondson, daughter of Andrew Edmondson and Elizabeth Steele Edmondson, on 29 Apr 1845 in Washington County, Virginia, with Rev. Robert C. Graham officiating.1 
Cens-18509 Sep 1850 In 1850 James, Eliza and their 5 year old daughter, Elizabeth were recorded living in Washington County. The household also included Eliza's father, Andrew Edmondson.5 
Cens-18601860  In 1860 the household consisted of James (39) who farmed land valued at $15,000 and who owned personal property worth $1,150, as well as Eliza (40), Elizabeth (14), Martha (9) and Andrew (3). In addition, James and Eliza provided a home for Martha Edmondson (38) [Eliza's sister].6 
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  By 1880 Walter [Andrew] was the only child still at home with James and Eliza. He was a physician. Two farm laborers (James Stovall, 14 and Sampson Crackett, 30) were also enumerated.7 
Cens-190011 Jun 1900 Twenty years later James and Eliza were recorded in the household of their daughter and son-in-law, William and Elizabeth Pruner in the Holston district of Washington County. James was listed as 68; Eliza as 73 [not correct]. They had been married 50 years [also not correct]. Eliza was the mother of 3 children, 2 of whom were living.8 
Death14 Nov 1902 James died on 14 Nov 1902 at age 81.4 
Burial He was buried at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.
