She was recorded on the 1850 census as Margareth A.J., on the 1860 census as Jane, on the 1870 census as Amelia and on the 1880 census as Amelia J. Her uncle's will calls her Jane. Probate records for the estates of her great uncles James, Robert and Mathew Buchanan refer to her as Jennie McSpadden which appears to be the variation she preferred as an adult.4,5,6,2

Cens-18701870  However, her parents were both deceased by 1870, in which year she and two brothers were enumerated living with her mother's brother and sister, William and Jane Moore back in Washington County, Virginia.6
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  Jennie's brothers both married, but Jennie remained in the home of her uncle William. William married late in life so that by 1880 Jennie was living in a household that included William, his wife Mary, their two young children, and William's sister Jane, who also had not married.2
LegateeSep 1892 William Moore died in Sep 1892. His will stated that his niece, "Jane" McSpadden, was to have a home and support as long as she remained single or wanted to stay with the family.1
