Moth-Death11 Aug 1865 When Martha was 18 her mother died following childbirth, leaving Martha to help care for her 6 younger siblings. 
Marriage6 Jan 1870 She married Nicholas Schupback on 6 Jan 1870 in Schuyler County, Missouri.5 
Cens-18704 Aug 1870 Following their marriage Martha and Nicholas lived next to Martha's widowed father and her siblings in Fabius township in Schuyler County. The 1870 census enumerated the couple 6 or 7 months after their wedding. "Nick" was 42 years old and Martha was 23. They were farming land valued at $1,720. Also living with them was Frederick Schupback, age 39, who was blind and working as a broommaker.3 
Cens-188018 Jun 1880 In 1880 Martha and Nicholas were recorded with 4 children: Rosa (9), Margaret (7), Adolph (2) and one month old James. Nicholas's brother Frederick was still living with the family and working as a broommaker. Nicholas reported his own occupation as "tanner."6 
Legatee18 Jun 1896  Frederick wrote his will in 1896, leaving $200 to Nicholas. The remainder of his estate was to be divided between Frederick's two brothers: Nicholas and Chris.7 
Cens-190011 Jun 1900 The 1900 census found Martha and Nicholas still living in Fabius township. Nicholas, enumerated as "Nic", stated that he was born in Germany (earlier census records reported his place of birth as Switzerland) and immigrated in 1850. His age was 71, he was farming and had been married 30 years. Martha was 53 and stated that she was the mother of 9 children, only 5 of whom were living.8
