Legatee22 Oct 1826  James' father, Moses Buchanan, left his land to James's brothers Hastings, Mathew and John. James and his brother Philip, along with their sisters Margaret, Elizabeth and Jane, were to receive the balance of his estate. They were also to receive an equal share of income from the hiring out of their father's slaves which was to occur until the youngest of their siblings came of age.1 
Marriage He married Nancy M. Houston, daughter of William Houston.5,6 
Cens-18509 Sep 1850  In the early years of their marriage James and Nancy resided with William Houston.7 [Nancy's widowed father who died in 1856] 
Exec-Legatee6 Feb 1858  James' mother Joanna wrote her will in February, 1858. She left James $5.00 and appointed him as her executor.3 
Cens-Sum  James and Nancy raised two sons and a daughter in Washington County. In 1860 James owned land valued at $2,000; in 1870 his land was valued at $1,000.8,2 
24 Jul 1867  The change in value may partly reflect the 24 Jul 1867 deed in which James and Nancy deeded their son Columbus 18 acres of land "in consideration of natural love and affection which parties of the first part bear unto their son... and in further consideration of support and attention as they grow old."9 
Death11 Sep 1876 James died on 11 Sep 1876 at age 58.4 
Burial He was buried at Kelly's Chapel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4

It mentioned wife Joanna, sons Hastings, Mathew, John, James, Philip and daughters Margaret, Elizabeth and Jane (Buchanan); also brother William and youngest child Moses Campbell Buchanan. The witnesses were James Edmondson and Samuel Edmondson. As no executor was named Joanna Buchanan was appt administrix. She posted bond in the amt of $5,000 with William Buchanan, John Katron, Robert Keys and James Edmondson providing security.
