Military | William fought for the Confederate cause during the Civil War. He served as a member of the 1st Virginia Cavalry (2) Co. D [known as Capt. Jones Co., the Washington Mounted Rifles, Co. L and finally as 2nd Co. D, 1st Regiment, Virginia Cavalry]. William enlisted March 15, 1862 at Abingdon. He appears consistently on company rosters until the summer and early fall of 1863 when he was noted to be sick in the hospital. William returned to the company later that fall but was captured at Mechanicsville, Virginia on May 12, 1864 [during the Battle of Meadow Bridge/Battle of Richmond Heights]. He was held at Point Lookout, Maryland until 1 Nov. 1864 when he was released in a prisoner exchange.6 | |

Will | 8 Jun 1888 | William wrote his will on 8 June 1888. He left his 162 acre tract in Rich Valley (Washington Co.) to his wife Mary as long as she remained single or until the youngest child came of age, following which she was to take either a child's part or a dower share. The land was then to be divided among William's 6 children, whom he named as George, William, Dixon, Flora J., Charles H., and Margaret J.10 |
