Military | | Andrew enlisted in the Confederate Army one month after Virginia seceded from the Union. On May 14, 1861 he enlisted in Co. L of the 1st Virginia Cavalry at Abingdon for a period of 1 year [Co. L later became (2nd) Co. D although at the time it was referred to simply as Co. D]. Andrew remained with the company past his 1 year commitment and was captured by Union forces on Oct. 11, 1863 [records created at the time alternately state that he was captured at Raccoon Ford or Brandy Station although neither of those battles took place in Oct. 1863]. He was initially held at Old Capital Prison in Washington DC but on Oct. 27th 1863 was transferred to Pt. Lookout Prison in Maryland. He was released in a prisoner exchange on Nov. 1, 1864.3 |
