Birth2 Feb 1839 John Matthew Buchanan was born on 2 Feb 1839, probably in Tennessee.3,4 
Childhood1850 He spent his childhood on the family farm in Sullivan County, Tennessee.5 
Military  John served as First Lieutenant of Co. A (Goodson Rifles) of the 37th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. He was captured at Spottsylvania Courthouse in May 1864 and released at Ft. Delaware in June 1865.6,1  
Heir1878 Beginning in 1878 John received payments from the estate of his great uncles James, Mathew and Robert Buchanan. The brothers died without children, leaving their estate to the descendants of their siblings, including John's deceased father, Ryburn Buchanan.7,8 
Marriage15 May 1878 He married Sarah Richard Cross on 15 May 1878, probably in Hardeman County, Tennessee.1 
Cens-188015 Jun 1880 Following their marriage John and Sarah farmed land in Fayette County, Tennessee.9 
  Their home sat near the Hardeman-Fayette County line.1 
Cens-190011 Jun 1900 The 1900 census recorded their place of residence as the community of Whiteville in Hardeman County, Tennessee. John was 61 years old and Sallie was 49. They had been married 22 years. In response the the enumerator's question, Sallie replied that she was the mother of 7 children, 5 of whom were living [Fannie died in 1898 at age 8 and John died earlier in 1900 at age 7]. Three of the surviving children were still at home: William, 18, Sallie 15 and Annie 13.4 
Death15 Apr 1911 John died on 15 Apr 1911 in Hardeman County at age 72.1 
Burial He was buried at Crowder Cemetery near Whiteville.1
