Birth7 Jun 1880 Charles Willot Smyth was born on 7 Jun 1880 in Virginia.3 
Childhood  When Charles was around 11 years old his father died. Charles and several of his siblings remained on the family farm in the Saltville District of Washington County with their widowed mother.4 
MarriageAug 1902 He married Sarah Ann Booth, daughter of Joel Booth and America Virginia Crenshaw, in Aug 1902 in Washington County, Virginia.2,5 
  Charles's older brother Hugh had married Sarah's older sister Mary the previous year. 
Cens-19205 Jan 1920  Charles and Sarah lived in the Saltville district of Washington County The 1920 census enumerated the couple with 7 children, who ranged in age from 16 year old Frank Jr. to 2 year old Margaret. The couple farmed land on Shortsville Road adjacent to Sarah's mother and brother Joel.6 
Cens-19305 Apr 1930  Charles and Sarah's last child was born just after the 1920 census. He was enumerated in 1930 (Charles, age 9), along with 3 older sisters. The 1930 census also recorded that Charles owned his farm. The family was again enumerated next to Sarah's brother Joel.7 
Occupation  Although census records describe Charles as a farmer, he was also a sawmill owner and operator.8 
Death10 Oct 1961 Charles died on 10 Oct 1961 at age 81.3 
Burial He was buried at Mountain View Baptist Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3 
  "Charlie" was remembered by family members as a man who made not only each of his children and grandchildren feel special, but also his nieces and nephews. He worked hard but managed to make it fun at the same time. He was also a man who enjoyed "dressing properly" for Sunday church and who sang with great enthusiasm. A staunch Democrat and devout Methodist, he held his own among inlaws who were equally staunch Baptists and Republicans.8
