Birth28 Jun 1801 John D. Moffett was born on 28 Jun 1801 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Land-Buy9 Feb 1824 On 9 Feb 1824 John purchased 80 acres of land in Rush County, Indiana from Israel Cox for $200. The land was described as the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 29, township 14, range 10 in the district of land sold at Brookville.2 
  The Rush County Indiana Deed Index entry for this transaction lists the buyer as "Dr. John Moffett." 
  Both John's older sister Mary (and her husband Andrew Gilson), and John's older brother William (and his wife Isabella Reed), settled in Rush County in the early 1820s. It is not clear however, that John ever actually settled there, either before or after his marriage. 
Marriage15 Sep 1831 He married Jane Dunn, daughter of William Dunn and Lydia Musgrave, on 15 Sep 1831 in Washington County, Virginia. Their wedding occured the same day John's brother Garner married Mary Jane Beatty Davis.3,4 
ChildDeath  John and Jane had one child, who was stillborn.5 
Will30 Sep 1834  John wrote his will the day before his death. He left his wife Jane all the personal property he "got with her", including a Negro girl Florah. John also left Jane the land they lived on. The remainder of his land, including a tract in Indiana and one in Illinois, he left to "my own people". John also appointed his "friend" John Moffett Sr. [his father] as his executor. The will was recorded in Washington County court on October 13th, 1834.6 
Death1 Oct 1834 John died on 1 Oct 1834 at age 33.7,8 
Burial He was buried at Moffett Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.7 
1837  John's siblings quit claimed their interest in the Rush Co., Indiana lands to their father who had moved there.9
