Birth14 Dec 1829 William White Allison was born on 14 Dec 1829 in Washington County, Virginia.5,1
Fath-DeathMay 1849 William's father died when William was 19 years old, leaving a will which requested that William remain at home and assist his mother with the farm and with the care of his younger siblings. In return, William was to receive half the proceeds from the farm. On his mother's death the farm was to be divided between William and his brothers Samuel, John and Abram.3
Ward27 Aug 1849 Despite being old enough for his father to leave him in care of his estate, William was legally underage. Therefore, on August 27, 1849, his mother's brother, John Clark was named his guardian.2
Guardian25 Dec 1854 However, John Clark died in October 1854, by which time William was over 21 himself, and on 25 Dec 1854 William was named guardian of his younger siblings Martha, Samuel, John and Abraham.6,7
Guardian22 Jan 1855 The following month, on 22 Jan 1855, William was also named guardian of Emily and Ellen Ann Clark, the two youngest daughters of John Clark, his own former guardian.8
Guardian24 Mar 1856 Then, on 24 Mar 1856 William was named guardian of James H., John A., Thomas C. and William B. Clark, their older siblings.9
Jan 1873  This responsibility appears to have continued for some years. As late as January, 1873 William wrote a note to W.G.G. Lowry, Clerk of the Washington County Court, stating that as guardian of the Clark children he had left a settlement and voucher with James Campbell, Commissioner. William wished to know if the documents had been recorded.10
Cens-18606 Jul 1860  Per his father's wishes William also assumed the responsibility for his younger siblings. The 1860 census enumeration recorded him as the head of a household that included his brothers Samuel, John and Abram. William was listed as the owner of land valued at $12,500 whereas each of his brothers owned land valued at $2,500. Although their mother was listed as the head of the adjacent household they were no doubt actually all residing in the family home.11
Cens-1860- Slave26 Jul 1860 The 1860 federal census slave enumeration also indicated that William was the owner of 3 slaves.12
Legatee28 Dec 1863  In late 1863 William's mother died, leaving he and his siblings to divide her personal estate. She stipulated that he was also to receive a note that she held on him.4
Marriage19 Feb 1867 At the age of 36, William White Allison married Mary Jane Ayres, daughter of John Preston Ayres and Mary Whitaker, on 19 Feb 1867 in Washington County.13
Cens-188021 Jun 1880 In 1880 William and Mary lived in the Saltville District of Washington County. Listed with them on that years census were William B. 12, Mary R. 9, Martha 6, Bettie 4 and Luvinia, age two. Also in the home was a thirteen year old servant girl and a boarder by the name of Lilburn Fullen (age 31). William (Senior)'s census entry indicated that he was crippled, or otherwise maimed or deformed.14
