Birth3 Apr 1856 Mary Jane Buchanan was born on 3 Apr 1856 in Virginia.3 
Marriage22 Dec 1870 She married William Harley Cox, son of James Cox and Louisa Harley, on 22 Dec 1870 in Smyth County, Virginia. The transcribed marriage record lists Mary Jane's mother as Nancy C. Buchanan, however Nancy was actually her stepmother.4 
Migration Shortly after their marriage William and Mary Jane migrated to California's Central Valley. They stopped first in Lodi, but by 1874 had settled further east near the small community of Linden.5,6 
Cens-Sum  Here the federal census enumerations recorded them beginning in 1880, where they were listed as farmers living in the Douglas township area of San Joaquin County.7,8,9,10 
Children Six children were born to William and Mary Jane Cox in California, beginning with a daughter born not long after their arrival who they named Gypsy.6 
Children  Their other children included Fred, Grace, Maud, Laura and a sixth child who died between census years and whose name is not known to me.11 
Death19 May 1945 Mary died on 19 May 1945 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California, at age 89.3 
Burial22 May 1945 She was buried on 22 May 1945 at Linden Cemetery in San Joaquin County, California.3 
Obituary1945  Mary Jane's obituary (1945), which refers to her as 'Mollie", mentions two daughters, Maude Harrison and Mrs. Arthur Moore and one son, Fred Cox. It also mentions a sister, Mrs. Maggie Steward of Texas.12
