Cens-18501850 James and Jane appeared on the census of 1850 in Smyth County, Virginia. Their first child, a three year old daughter named Martha was also enumerated.16 
  A son arrived shortly after the official census date and hence was not recorded. 
Cens-18601860 The family was next enumerated on the 1860 census where three children were listed with them: Martha O. 12, Mathew R. 10, and Mary Jane 4.17 
  A daughter, Minerva had been born in 1854 and died in 1855. Another child was also born to James and Jane, and died in infancy but his or her name is not known. 
WidowedApr 1868 James was widowed in April of 1868 when Jane died. 
Marriage27 Oct 1869 He married second Nancy (Bates) Umbarger on 27 Oct 1869 in Smyth County, Virginia.2 
 He was 50 and she was 28 or 29. 
Cens-187015 Jul 1870  James and Nancy were enumerated on the 1870 census of Rich Valley in Smyth County, a few months after their marriage. Their family consisted of a blend of children from both of their previous marriages: Mathew, age 19, Mary J., age 14 and Margaret, age 9, all Buchanans, and F.V. [Florence], age 8 and James, age 6, both Umbargers.18 
Cens-18801880  Over the next ten years James and Nancy [or "Nannie" as she often appears] added three children of their own: William B., John H., and Nellie M.19 
Residence1884 By 1884 James and Nancy were living in Denton County Texas. On the 26th of February of that year James wrote a letter to William Byars and stated that Frank Kincannon and W.H. Buchanan, brother of B.F. Buchanan, were there with him.8 
Cens-19001900  James and Nancy were also recorded in Denton County on the 1900 census. James was 79; "Nannie" was 60. He reported that he owned his farm and it was not mortgaged. She reported having given birth to 5 children, all of whom were living. The 3 children born to James and Nancy were still living at home: William, age 28, worked as a railroad engineer, John, age 25, worked as a tel__ operator, and daughter Nellie was 21.20 
Death10 Jun 1901 James died on 10 Jun 1901 at age 81.5 
Burial He was buried at Chillicothe Cemetery in Hardeman County, Texas.5
