Birth20 Mar 1842 William Long Snodgrass was born on 20 Mar 1842 in Washington County, Virginia.6,1 
Childhood  William was the youngest of his parent's children. When William was just a year old his father died. Four years later William's mother also died. 
Cens-18509 Aug 1850  William then lived with his mother's widowed sister, Jeannette Clark Porterfield, and her son John. William's siblings each lived with a different relative.7 
Military14 May 1861  In May 1861 William enlisted as a private under Capt. W.E. Jones [later Gen. "Grumble" Jones] in Co. L. [the Washington Mounted Rifles, later designated 2nd Co. D] of the 1st Virginia Cavalry. Although William initially enlisted for 1 year he eventually served for 3 years. Except for one or two furloughs, he consistently appeared on company muster rolls through Aug. 1864.8  
Marriage22 Sep 1864 He married Sara Lou Tecia Grant, daughter of Gardner Grant and Mary Holland, on 22 Sep 1864 in Washington County, Virginia.9 
Cens-188023 Jun 1880  William and Sara (recorded as "Latetia") were recorded on the 1880 census for the Goodson District of Washington Co. with 5 children: Mattie (14), Samuel (13), Toliver (11), Addie (9) and Buford (2).10 
Cens-190016 Jun 1900  Twenty years later they were again enumerated farming in the Goodson District. Sara's entry stated she was the mother of 9 children, with 7 living. Two daughters had been added to the family since the 1880 census and were enumerated as Odell (19) and Sarah L. (14).11 
WidowedMar 1910  Sarah died in March 1910. 
Cens-19107 May 1910  Two months later William and his two youngest daughters were enumerated in the Holston District of Washington County.12 
Death18 Jan 1922 William died on 18 Jan 1922 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 79.6,4 
Burial19 Jan 1922 He was buried on 19 Jan 1922 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington County.6
