MotherPhebe Dryden Wilson2 b. 3 Dec 1820, d. 14 Aug 1894
Birth22 Oct 1867 Phoebe Emmaline Larimer was born on 22 Oct 1867 in Virginia.3,4
Religion22 Nov 1885 Emma (as she appears in some records) Larimer joined the Rock Spring Presbyterian Church in Meadowview, Washington County, Virginia, on 22 Nov 1885. She was 18.5
Marriage13 Aug 1888 She married first Samuel Logan Ryburn, son of Col. William S. Ryburn and Rebecca Jane McCall, on 13 Aug 1888 in Washington County.2,6
14 Aug 1888 She was 20 and he was 27.
Migration Phoebe and Samuel did not appear on any census records between the time of their marriage in 1888 and his death in 1898. However, the birth locations recorded in other sources for their sons suggest they spent most of their married life in Virginia, with a short stay around 1891 in Illinois.
Widowed7 Mar 1898 Phoebe was 30 years old when Samuel died on 7 Mar 1898.
Court RecordDec 1898  A few months later Samuel's father added a codicil to his will, leaving his "home farm" to Samuel's 3 sons. Phoebe was to receive dower rights to the land only as long as she remained single.7
Cens-19004 Jun 1900  When the 1900 census was recorded 18 months later Phoebe and the boys (Frank 10, William 8 and John 6) were clearly living on the family land left to them in William's will.4,8
Samuel's sister, Sarah Snodgrass, and his brother, John Ryburn, were enumerated in adjacent households. John had been left the use of a portion of the home in his father's will, but it is not clear if that is where he was living. He was no doubt taking care of the family farm for his widowed sister-in-law and his nephews.
Five years later Phoebe and John married.
Marriage8 Apr 1905 She married second John David George Ryburn, her first husband's brother, on 8 Apr 1905 in Washington County, Virginia.9
12 Apr 1905 She was 37 and he was 51.
Cens-191012 Apr 1910  Although Phoebe would have technically lost any rights to the land when she remarried, the farm actually belonged to her sons and it appears that John, Phoebe and the 3 boys continued to live on the Ryburn lands. They were enumerated on the 1910 census with William and Sarah Snodgrass again as the adjacent household.10
Cens-19205 Jan 1920  By 1920 only Phoebe's son William was still at home with she and John.11
Cens-193024 Apr 1930 William married in 1925 and John died in early 1927 so that by the time of the 1930 census Phoebe was recorded as a member of William's household, along with his wife and several children. Since William and his brothers had inherited their grandfather's farm (and William's brothers were not living in Washington County) it is likely Phoebe, William and his family were all still living in the same place as in previous years but with William now listed as the head of the household.12
Death20 Oct 1949 Phoebe died on 20 Oct 1949 at age 81.3
Burial She was buried between her two husbands in Rock Spring Cemetery, Washington County, Virginia.3

  7. [S853] William S. Ryburn will and codicil (recorded 1900), Washington Co., Virginia Will Book 26: 296. William's will, which replaced a previous one, was dated 30 June, 1886. He added a codicil on 17 Dec. 1898. Both were recorded in court on 26 Feb. 1900. J.D.G. Ryburn and W.J. Snodgrass took the oath of executor without security, as directed by the will.
  8. [S16] William's codicil, dated 17 Dec. 1898, also contained an entry stating that he was deeding a portion of the home farm to his daughter Sarah E. M.M. Snodgrass and her husband William. In addition John D.G. Ryburn was given the use of a room in the house; the 1900 census enumerated William and Sarah Snodgrass, as well as John Ryburn adjacent to Phoebe and her sons, suggesting they were all living on William's home farm.
