John Porterfield

Birth1751 John Porterfield was born in 1751. 
Marriage1784 He married Elizabeth (Kincannon) Brooks, daughter of Francis Kincannon and Elizabeth (?), in 1784.1,2 
Land-Grant1 May 1787 On 1 May 1787 John received a grant for 110 acres in washington County, Virginia. The land had been surveyed in Feb. 1785. John purchased the land as the assignee of a treasury warrant issued to Aaron Lewis in Dec. 1781. The tract sat on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River adjacent to William Crunckleton and Hugh Johnston.3 
Land-Grant2 May 1787  The following day John also received a patent for 150 acres which sat adjacent to his other parcel as well as to the land owned by Cronkleton and Johnson. It was described as "on a fork of Baker's [later Hutton's] Branch, the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River". This patent was issued in right of settlement and had also been surveyed in Feb. 1785. John paid 15 shillings for the land.4 
  John cleared the tract and built a log house which stood for many years. It eventually burned and was replaced by a brick house in the 1830s.5 
Land-Grant9 Apr 1805  John added another smaller parcel of land to his tract when he received a grant for an additional 16 acres in 1805. The parcel sat adjacent to John's larger tract, as well as to the lands of Robert Mitchell, William Stewart, and the old Beattie survey.6 
Will18 Dec 1832  John's will, dated 18 Dec. 1832 left his land and farming utensils to his son James. In return James was to provide for John's comfortable support during his natural life. John also instructed that his horses, cattle, sheep and hogs were to be sold and the proceeds divided his other 3 children who were named as: Francis Porterfield, Sarah Hutton, and Eleanor Clark. James was appointed executor with James Kincannon, R.B. Edmondson and Samuel Dunn witnesses.7 
Death6 Apr 1833 John died on 6 Apr 1833.8 
Will-Recd22 Apr 1833 The will was recorded on 22 Apr 1833. James posted bond in the amt of $1,000 with Beatie Ryburn his security.7 
Probate Recd27 Jul 1835  The settlement of John's estate by his son and executor James listed distributions of $107.63 to Sarah Hutton, Eleanor Clark and the heirs of Francis Porterfield. James relinquished his share of this part of the estate.9
