Research Comment:

Was Martha the daughter of Robert Beattie and Pauline White Beattie? On March 27, 1826 Josiah Beattie writing from Seven Mile Ford in Virginia to his brother Samuel Beattie in Boone Co., Missouri stated:

" My second son is about 7 months old. He is a very fine child for his age. We call him James Clabourn. Robert's second daughter is about two months old. She is also a very fine child and her name [is] Julian."

The comment was one of a series of updates Josiah wrote about the brother's siblings. It is reasonable then to assume "Robert" was Josiah and Samuel's brother Robert who had married Pauline White in Feb. 1823. Robert and Pauline's first documented child, Claiborne, was born in Jan. 1828. The daughter, Julian, must have been born about Jan. 1826 and apparently did not reach adulthood. But she was the second daughter. Was Elizabeth, born in June 1824, Robert's first daughter? Alternately, Martha could have been the daughter of David Beattie as there is a gap in his children around 1824.
