Marriage22 May 1845 She married John R. McKee, son of James McKee and Sally Roe, on 22 May 1845.5,2
Cens-Sum  Following their marriage John and Elizabeth lived in Washington County south of the present day community of Glade Spring. They had 8 children together.6,7
Widowed6 Jun 1863  John died in June 1863 as a result of illness or injury related to the Civil War.
The obituary of Elizabeth's daughter Martha described the families next move: "Her father having died in the Civil War from exposure, her mother at the close of the war, put what she had left in a covered wagon and with her three boys and three girls and some neighbors, came to Madison county and lived many years."8
Marriage5 Oct 1869 She married Jesse Pafford on 5 Oct 1869 in Madison County, Iowa.9,10
Elizabeth and her first husband had lived near Jesse and his first wife in Washington County. One might speculate that Elizabeth had traveled to Iowa with the Pafford family.

Cens-188022 Jul 1880  Ten years later Elizabeth, at age 52, was enumerated as the head of a household that included her 8 year old son John and daughters "Etta" [Rebecca Fayetta] (25) and Orlena (10). Elizabeth's entry stated she was suffering from neuralgia and pleurisy; the entries for John and Etta noted that they could not read or write.12

Burial She was buried at Peru Cemetery in Peru, Madison County, Iowa.4

Research Comment:

Elizabeth's 1900 census entry states that she was the mother of 9 children, 6 of whom were living. All 9 children have been identified although there is some inconsistency as to their names. For instance, Thomas Jefferson (1860 census; also birth record) appears to be the same person as Walter J. (headstone). And Rebecca Fayetta's full name on her Washington Co. birth record was Rachel Nancy Mary Jane Rebecca Fayetta. Similarly, daughter Martha's birth entry suggested she had multiple middle names although only the initials were recorded.

Martha (McKee) Hiatt's obituary stated that Elizabeth's 3 daughters and 3 sons made the trip to Iowa. Sarah, Zachariah, Thomas/Walter, Rebecca, Martha and John McKee can all be identified in Iowa records, suggesting Francis and Andrew died in Virginia.13,8
