Birth27 Jul 1800 Margaret Caldwell was born on 27 Jul 1800 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Marriage1823 She married Benjamin Greer in 1823.1
Cens-18301830  Benjamin was enumerated as the head of a Washington County household in 1830. He appears to be the male noted in the 30-39 age group. The household also included a 30-39 year old female, presumably Margaret, and 4 children, 2 males and 2 females.2
Widowed  Margaret was probably widowed in the late 1830s; her last child was born around 1838.
Cens-18401840  In 1840 she was recorded as the head of the family. The oldest male was 15-19 and probably represented son Samuel. Four females under 15 were noted, along with the 40-49 year old female who would have been Margaret.3
Cens-18504 Sep 1850  For a few years Margaret probably supported herself and her children with the help of her oldest son, Samuel. However by the early 1840s Samuel married and started his own family. Margaret and several of her children then lived with John Calwell [her brother] who ran the county Poor House.4
Migration  At some point after the 1850 census Margaret moved to Caldwell County, North Carolina.
Margaret's sons Samuel, James and John also made the move to Caldwell County as did her daughters Margaret and Martha. However Samuel moved on to Kentucky.5
Cens-186031 Jul 1860  Margaret's 1860 household was headed by her 27 year old son James who was employed as a mechanic. The household also included John, 25, Martha, 23 and Margaret Lowdermilk, 29.6,7 [Margaret and Benjamin's daughter Margaret married Henry Lowdermilk]
In 1862 daughter Martha married John Sudderth. Margaret was enumerated in their home in Lenoir Township (Caldwell Co.) in 1870. By this time Margaret's son John had married and joined his brother Samuel in Floyd Co. Kentucky. Margaret's son James died on 19 July 1863 of wounds received during the Civil War. John Suddreth died before 1880. Margaret was enumerated in the summer of 1880 living next to her widowed daughter Martha Suddreth and her children. Margaret was 79 years old.8,9,10,7
Death23 Jul 1884 Margaret died on 23 Jul 1884 in Caldwell County, North Carolina, at age 83.1
Burial She was buried at Harper's Chapel Church Cemetery in Caldwell County, North Carolina.7

Research Comment:

Margaret and Benjamin's 1830 and 1840 households indicate the presence of two females born between 1825 and 1830. Their identity is not known. However, Washington County marriage records list two possible candidates: Ann Greer who married Samuel Robinson on 5 Dec. 1849 and Eliza J. Greer who married William I. McKee on 31 Jan 1850.11
