George W. Hutton1

b. 18 January 1825, d. 18 July 1893
Birth18 Jan 1825 George W. Hutton was born on 18 Jan 1825.2
Marriage20 Jan 1845 He married Sarah Ann Slemp on 20 Jan 1845 in Smyth County, Virginia.1
Cens-185016 Oct 1850  Five years after their marriage George and Sarah were recorded in Smyth County with their first 3 children: James F. (4), Sebastion (2) and Martha J. (1).3
Cens-186014 Sep 1860  They added an additional 5 children in the next ten years. All 8 children were enumerated in 1860. George owned land worth $800 and personal property worth $200.4
Cens-18702 Aug 1870  The 1870 census clarified that the family lived in Marion township.5
Sarah had given birth to 3 additional children after the 1860 enumeration but son George W. Jr. died in 1865 at less than 1 month of age.
At least two Hutton family members owed George money by 1852. James Hutton owed George $100. George had worked on a road for James and loaned him money. James sold W. Goodpasture various items in trust to secure the debt. William Hutton owed George and James H. Hutton $100. William secured the debt by a deed of trust to Israel Buchanan.6
Will15 Jun 1893  George wrote his will on June 15th, 1893. He devised two bonds to his son J.W. They totaled $200 and had been executed by J.W. for the purchase of George's home farm. George also left J.W.'s daughter Lilly 2 3/4 acres excluding the M.E. Church lot. This land was adjacent to the J.W. Hutton land.

The will also left cash to the following children: James F. Hutton, Marthy Halsey, Almira Sharp, A.B. Hutton and 3 children of Bascom Hutton (Cora, Lessie and Victoria).

Son Abram J. Hutton received land east of G.H. Killingers and daughter Polly Haulsy [Halsey?] also received land in the vicinity of the Killinger tract. Son H.M. Hutton was left George's As__ T__ [?] land with the stipulation that he pay his sister Elizabeth Hutton $200 if she was widowed, but only the interest if she was not widowed (the principal to go to her children on her death).7
Death18 Jul 1893 George died on 18 Jul 1893 at age 68.2

Research Comment:

George's parents have not been established. However he was enumerated on all census records living among members of the Leonard Hutton family of Smyth County. It may be important to note that George and Sarah named their first child James Frederick Hutton. Sarah's father was Frederick Slemp. Was George's father James Hutton [son of Leonard]? Some researchers have suggested George was a son of Leonard himself, but George's 1880 census states his father was born in Virginia [Leonard was born in PA] suggesting George was Leonard's grandchild, rather than his child. Also, there is no indication of George in Leonard's 1830 and 1840 households. James Hutton's 1830 household does have an otherwise unidentified male in the under 5 category, but his 1840 census does not indicate a 10-14 year old male. However, the household of Dixon Hutton [another son of Leonard] does include a 10-14 year old male in 1840 who was not Dixon's son [Dixon had only been married 3 years]. James and Dixon were known to be close; perhaps George, if he was James' son, was helping his Uncle Dickson.8
