Birth26 Dec 1812 Edward Hutton was born on 26 Dec 1812 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4 
Marriage17 Oct 1833 He married Elizabeth Wolfe, daughter of Martin Wolfe, on 17 Oct 1833 in Smyth County, Virginia.5 
Cens-185013 Sep 1850  Edward and Elizabeth spent their married lives in Smyth County. Many of the neighboring families were relatives. In 1850 their household included Dicy J. (16), William D. (13), Sarah M. (10), Mary Ann (5) and Leonard F. (2). Also living in the home, but recorded as a separate household was the family of Michael and Sally Cormany.6 [Sally was probably Edward's younger sister] 
17 Oct 1859  In Oct. 1859 Edward and Elizabeth released their interest in 75 acres of land that had belonged to Martin Wolfe (Elizabeth's father). In addition to Elizabeth and Edward, the following individuals released their interest in favor of Martin R. Wolfe: Rachel Wolfe (stated to be Martin's widow), Nathaniel and Dicey Jones, Samuel and Mahala Robinson, James H. and Sarah Snider, Drury and Ruth Bishop, Caleb and Susan Sherwood, Silas H. and Elizabeth Wolfe, James D. and Mary A. Wolfe, and Sampson H. Wolfe.7 
Cens-186014 Sep 1860  Two additional children were born after 1850 and were enumerated in 1860 as Thomas L. (10) and Susan E. (5). Edward's land was valued at $1,500 and he owned personal property worth $200. A Joseph Coker (40) and Mary Coker (26) were also part of the household.8 
Cens-18702 Aug 1870  Following the Civil War Edward's land dropped in value to $1,300.1 
Cens-18807 Jun 1880  Edward and Elizabeth continued to share their home with extended family members. In 1880 this included their son Thomas and his wife "Clemmie" [Sarah Clementine Wolfe], and their 3 young children.9 
Will11 Jun 1886  Edward wrote his will on June 11th, 1886. He left the land on which he lived, consisting of about 100 acres adjoining John W. Newman, Thomas F. McDonald, N. Snavely and Goodpasture, to his son Thomas L. Preston Hutton. However Edward stipulated that one half acre of land, which included the grave yard, was to be set aside for the use of the family and public, and that passage to the graveyard from the main road was to be allowed. In return, Edward required Thomas to support and maintain Edward and his wife for the rest of their lives, to pay their debts and to pay each of their other children $50.10 
Death15 Jun 1893 Edward died on 15 Jun 1893 in Smyth County, Virginia at age 80.2 
Burial He was buried at Hutton Cemetery in Smyth County, Virginia.11 

Research Comment:

Edward acquired the bulk of his Smyth County land in a series of deeds beginning in July 1839. He first acquired 37 acres from James and Dixon Hutton. In 1850 he acquired a second 37 acres from William Sturges. And in 1852 he added 18 acres which he purchased from Nicolas Snavely.
