Marriage22 Apr 1858 William Newton Thompson married Mary Ann E. Butt, daughter of Richard Wesley Butt and Eliza Elizabeth Maiden, on 22 Apr 1858 in Washington County, Virginia.3 
Death29 Sep 1864 William died of dysentery on 29 Sep 1864 in Elmira, New York, while held there as a prisoner during the Civil War. Family history adds that William was to be released as part of a prisoner exchange but stayed behind to help his brother-in-law, Fletcher Butt, who was too sick to travel. But Will became ill too and died before Fletcher.4,5
