Birth21 Oct 1829 Rev. Henry Alderson Maiden was born on 21 Oct 1829 in Botetourt County, Virginia.3
MarriageFeb 1852 He married Christina Elizabeth Fudge in Feb 1852 in Smyth County, Virginia.4,5
WidowedFeb 1855  Christina died in 1855, leaving a daughter, Nancy, who was less than a year old.
Marriage7 Aug 1856 He married Mary Margaret Kelly, daughter of William Kelly and Margaret Butt, on 7 Aug 1856.6,7
Mary's mother, Margaret Butt, was a sibling to Richard and Rebecca Butt, who married two of Henry's siblings (Eliza and William Maiden).
Guardian26 Jan 1857 Henry was named guardian of his daughter Nancy on 26 Jan 1857 in Washington County, Virginia.8
Cens-186027 Jun 1860 A few years after their marriage Henry and Mary were enumerated in Washington County on land valued at $1,000. Besides Henry (29) and Mary (26), the household included Nancy 6 [Henry's daughter from his 1st marriage], Sarah 2 and Albert 1.9
Another daughter was born in early 1861 and named Lizzie. However, both Lizzie and her older sister Sarah died in 1862; Lizzie from scarlet fever in July and Sarah from diptheria in June. John's father had passed away in May of 1862 as well; it must have been an extremely difficult year for the young families on Maiden Creek as Henry's brother James lost 2 young children that year as well.1
Henry's daughter Nancy married in Dec. 1879 and daughter Mary married in 1878.
Cens-188015 Jun 1880  The 1880 census for the Saltville district enumerated Mary and her husband Albert Bondurant living with Henry (50) and Mary (47). Henry and Mary's son Albert was present too [he would marry later that year]. The men were farming.10
Occupation Although Henry is listed as a farmer on census records, family records state that he was also a Baptist minister.11,12
Henry's 3 children who lived to adulthood all married and had families of their own, but in each case the children were left without their mother at a young age. Henry's daughter Mary Bondurant died in 1889 from meningitis leaving a son (2 children preceded her), his daughter-n-law "Mae" (wife of son Albert) died in 1893 leaving 5 children, and his daughter from his first marriage, Nancy Dungan, died in 1902 leaving 3 children.
Death20 Mar 1900 Henry died on 20 Mar 1900 at age 70.13,11
Burial He was buried at Maiden Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.11

Research Comment:

The exact number of children born to Henry and his first wife, Christina, is not clear. The daughter, Nancy, born 4 May 1854 is not in question. In addition, the Washington County birth records include an entry for a John Maiden, born 21 Jan. 1853 to Henry and Elizabeth Maiden. The same child appears to have died 4 days later, although the abstracted death record lists the child's mother as Jane, not Elizabeth. Henry's family bible does not include an entry for a son John. On the other hand the birthdate of the child fits well in what would otherwise be a 27 month gap between Henry and Christina's marriage and the birth of daughter Nancy.

An equally puzzling question is the possibility that Christina died after giving birth to a child who also died. Sarah Rollins, in her book on the Maiden family, states that "Henry and Elizabeth had a daughter born in May 1854 and named her Nancy Susanna for both her grandmothers. The next year a second child was born and Elizabeth and the infant died and were buried together at Wolfe Cemetery, about 2 miles from Maiden Cemetery." Joanna Owens, a descendant of Henry and his second wife, notes that her mother may have contributed the information on Christina and the infant to Ms Rollins for her book. Joanna notes that these events took place years before her mother's birth and it is possible the information as reported to her was no longer entirely accurate. It should be noted that Christina's date of death, along with the date of birth/death of the presumed infant, is only 9 months after the birth of Christina's daughter Nancy.

Cemetery transcription records for Washington County list Christina as buried at Wolfe Cemetery, however there is no mention of an infant. Neither is there a record for the infant John Maiden at Wolfe or any of the other Washington County cemeteries.14,15,16
