Birth28 Sep 1807 Elizabeth Latener McQuown was born on 28 Sep 1807 in Virginia.4,5
Marriage14 Oct 1830 She married James Beaty, son of John Beaty and Margaret Montgomery, on 14 Oct 1830 in Washington County, Virginia.6
Cens-18401840  James Beattie's 1840 household included: 1 male 5-9 [John]; 1 male 10-14 [possibly Joseph F. Beatie?]; 40-49 [James]; 1 female under 5 [Mary Elizabeth]; 2 females 5-9 [Ann, Margaret]; 1 female 30-39.7 [Elizabeth]
Widowed26 May 1847  James died in May 1847.8
Cens-18507 Sep 1850  Elizabeth was recorded as the head of her own household in 1850 when the names of all members of a household were recorded for the first time. She was 42 and owned land worth $1,760. The following individuals were listed directly below her: Joseph F. (22), Margaret (18), Ann (17), John (15) and Mary E. (11).5
Cens-187021 Sep 1870  Elizabeth's daughter Margaret married William Gaither in 1856. The couple appear to have had 4 children. By 1870 William Gaither was either deceased or otherwise missing and Margaret and the 4 children lived with Elizabeth. Elizabeth's daughter Ann married William Tally in 1866. They too lived with Elizabeth in 1870. William Tally was 25; Ann (Beaty) Tally was 37. They appear to have had a 3 year old son James. Perhaps reflecting the aftermath of the Civil War, Elizabeth's land was valued at $1,500 and her personal property at $150.9
Milit-Pens9 Mar 1878  In 1878 Elizabeth applied for a pension based on James' service in the War of 1812. She received $8 a month beginning on 9 March 1878. Years earlier, in the 1850s, she had received two bounty land warrants, both of which were assigned to other people.10
In Sept. 1879 Elizabeth's daughter Mary Elizabeth (Beaty) Reed died. A few months later, in Jan. 1880 Elizabeth's daughter Margaret (Beaty) Gaither died of consumption. Elizabeth's youngest daughter Nancy died in 1849 at three years of age and her son John Beaty is believed to have died during the Civil War.
Death11 Dec 1887 Elizabeth died of kidney disease and old age on 11 Dec 1887 in Washington County, Virginia at age 80.11,4,12
Probate Recd1889  Benjamin Reid [husband of Elizabeth's deceased daughter Mary Elizabeth] served as administrator of Elizabeth's estate. An 1889 settlement record listed payment entries starting in Dec. 1887. Though it does not state they are legatees, and the amounts are not identical, payments were made to Ann O. Tally ($78), J.F. Beaty ($60), C.A. Gaither ($60), Thomas Read ($20), W.H. Pruner $27.52), Julia M. Tyler $3.25) and Wm J. Read ($30).13

Research Comment:

Was Elizabeth the mother of an additional child named Josephus F. Beaty? Joseph was enumerated in Elizabeth's household in 1850 after which he moved to Polk Co., Missouri. He appears to be the J.F. Beattie who in 1890 sold his 1/4 undivided interest in 9 acres of land in Washington Co. Virginia which had belonged to Elizabeth Beatie, deceased.

Joseph was born 3 years prior to James and Elizabeth's marriage. He does not appear to be the child of an earlier marriage as Elizabeth's application for a pension based on James's War of 1812 service provided their marriage date (certified by the Washington Co. court clerk) and included a statement that neither had been previously married.

James Beaty inherited a share of his grandfather Thomas Montgomery's land on the death of James' mother in the 1820s or early 1830s. The distribution of that land resulted in a law suit that continued for many years. When James died in 1847 his heirs became party to the suit. Joseph's name was not listed on any of the papers created at that time. Yet Joseph carried the Beaty name.
