Josephus F. Beaty1,2

b. September 1827
BirthSep 1827 Josephus F. Beaty was born in Sep 1827 in Washington County, Virginia.3,1
Name Other  He appears in many records as Joseph.
Cens-18507 Sep 1850  In 1850 Joseph F. Beatie was enumerated in the household of 42 year old Elizabeth Beatie in Washington County, Washington. He was 22. The 1850 census did not record relationships between household members. However, Joseph was listed directly below Elizabeth and before other individuals known to have been her children, suggesting Joseph was probably also her son.4
Marriage18 Jan 1855 Josephus married Mary P. Walker on 18 Jan 1855 in Cedar County, Missouri.2
Cens-186029 Sep 1860  Five years later the couple were recorded on the 1860 census for Jefferson township in Cedar County. Joseph's entry stated that he was a farmer and owned land worth $150. Besides Mary (23), the household included three Beaty children: "R.W." (5), Susan E. (3) and John A. (8/12).5
Military1 Aug 1862  Josephus enlisted in Co. E. of the 6th Missouri Cavalry (Union Army) on Aug. 1, 1862 at Springfield, Missouri. However, he was suffering from kidney disease at the time which became debilitating as the war progressed. On Sept. 12, 1863 the Company Commander completed a certificate of disability form which was signed by the Regimental surgeon on Sept. 28th. The form reveals that Josephus F. Beaty was born in Washington Co., Virginia and was 35 when he enlisted in August of 1862. At that time he stood 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair and was a farmer by occupation. By the time he was discharged Josephus was unable to ride horseback and the surgeon stated he was "much debilitated."1
Cens-18701870  Joseph returned to his farm in Cedar County after his discharge. By 1870 he and Mary had added 3 more children to their family.6
Cens-18807 Jun 1880  Three additional children were born between 1870 and 1880. All 9 of the couple's children were enumerated with them on the 1880 census for Cedar County. This census, unlike earlier ones, asked the place of birth for each individual's mother and father. Joseph, enumerated as "J.F." reported that his father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Virginia.7
CensusJun 1890  One of the few schedules to survive from the 1890 census was the Special Schedule of [Union] Veterans. Josephus F. Beaty was included on the Jefferson Township, Cedar Co. schedule. It was noted that he enlisted Aug. 1, 1862 as a private in Co. E of the 6th Missouri Cavalry and was discharged Sept. 28, 1863 suffering from rheumatism. His current (June 1890) post office address was recorded as Humansville in Polk Co., Missouri.8
Humansville sat just across the Polk County line from Jefferson township in Cedar County and suggests Josephus and Mary lived near the border between the two counties.
Land-Sell4 Mar 1890  This is reinforced by a March 1890 deed in which "J.F." Beaty and Mary, his wife, of Polk Co., Missouri sold their 1/4th interest in 9 acres of land in Washington Co., Virginia formerly belonging to Elizabeth Beaty, deceased.9
Cens-190012 Jun 1900  Forty five years after they married Joseph and Mary appeared on their 4th federal census enumeration for Jefferson township in Cedar County. Mary's entry stated that she was the mother of 9 children, all but 1 of whom were living. Oddly, on this census Joseph's entry stated his parents were both born in Pennsylvania.10

Research Comment:

The identify of Josephus's parents remains something of an unsolved mystery. He was probably the son of Elizabeth Latener McQuown; if so, he was born prior to Elizabeth's marriage to James Beaty. The fact that he was enumerated directly below the widowed Elizabeth in 1850 (and not following her other known children) suggests strongly that Josephus was not simply a relative living with the family. Secondly, the 1890 Washington Co. deed for "J.R. and Mary Beaty" appears to represent Josephus and Mary releasing a legal claim on Elizabeth Beaty's land.

But who was Josephus's father? Josephus was not mentioned as an heir of James Beaty in a court suit filed over land James inherited from his grandfather, Thomas Montgomery. Furthermore, James Beaty was born in Virginia whereas Joseph's census records alternately reported his father's place of birth as Tennessee or Pennsylvania.
