BirthCircacirca 1835 John Beaty was born circa 1835 in Virginia, probably in Washington County.2
Childhood  John's father died when John was about 12 years old. John continued to live with his mother in whose Washington County household he was recorded in 1850 (15) and 1860 (25).2,3
John was probably the same John Beaty who enlisted in the Kings Mountain Rifles (after reorganization Co. H. of the 37th Virginia Infantry) on Aug. 24, 1861 at Abingdon. John was stated to be 26 on the company muster roll. There were no other known John Beaty/Beattie/Beatie men of the same age living in the county at the time. John was appointed first Sergent on April 23rd, 1862. He was wounded during fighting at Cedar Run, Virginia on Aug. 9, 1862. John apparently recovered enough to return to his company and in Jan. 1863 was detached to Washington Co. to acquire clothing for his company. He was apparently wounded again in June 1863 as he was furloughed wounded until November 1863.4
No further records were found in John Beaty's Compiled Service Record however the entry for John's mother's household in the published work 1850 Census - Washington Co., Virginia - Annotated suggests John was killed on 10 May 1864 "in the Wilderness". This probably referred to the Battle of the Wildnerness which was fought on May 5-7, 1864. Many members of the 37th regiment were captured in May 1864.5
