Birth28 Apr 1824 Col. James Lafayette Franklin Campbell was born on 28 Apr 1824.5,1
Marriage19 Aug 1846 He married first Rosannah E. McConnell, daughter of Abram McConnell and Susanna Berry McChesney, on 19 Aug 1846.6,7
19 Aug 1846 He was 22 and she was 18.
Cens-18501850 James and Rosannah appeared on the 1850 census enumeration for Washington County, Virginia, approximately 4 years after their marriage. Their 2 year old daughter Mary was also recorded that year.8
Rosanna gave birth to a total of 5 children, 3 of whom died as infants.9
One of the infants may have been a daughter who died in 1854 at 3 years of age. Her name was Jane E. Campbell. Washington County death records list her parents as James L. and Eliza/Elizabeth Campbell. Since Rosannah's middle initial was E. it is possible she was also known as Eliza/Elizabeth. However there existed another couple in Washington County who may be more likely candidates for Jane's parents. They were James L. Campbell and Eliza (Brown) Campbell. Both couples had gaps in the sequence of their children that would allow for a child born in 1851.10,11
WidowedFeb 1859  Rosannah herself died from a fever in early 1859.
Marriage16 Nov 1859 He married second Josephine Bondurant on 16 Nov 1859 in Washington County, Virginia.4
16 Nov 1859 He was 35 and she was 24.
Cens-18601860 In 1860 the census recorded the family as James 36, Josephine, 25, Mary 13 and Susan, 2 (daughters from his first marriage). James owned real estate valued at $3,000 and personal property worth $6,000.12
Cens-18701 Jul 1870 The 1870 census clarified that the family was living in the Goodson township section of Washington County near his sister Jane and her husband Isaac Carmack. In the 10 years since the previous enumeration daughter Mary had married and left home, but Susan, at age 12 was attending school. James and Josephine had also added a son and daughter of their own to the family.13
Occupation James listed himself as a farmer on the various census enumerations but he also served as commissioner of revenue and sheriff of the county.14
Death30 Jan 1871 James died on 30 Jan 1871 at age 46.5
Burial He was buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.5
