Eliza Brown1

b. 18 December 1821, d. 12 September 1904
Birth18 Dec 1821 Eliza Brown was born on 18 Dec 1821 in Virginia.2,3
Marriage25 Mar 1843 She married James L. Campbell, son of Robert Campbell and Annabelle Lowrey, on 25 Mar 1843 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Cens-185011 Sep 1850  Eliza and James were enumerated in Washington County in 1850. James owned land valued at $600 which he was farming. Also in the home were John (6), Robert (4) and David (1).4
Cens-186023 Aug 1860  By 1860 James's land was valued at $1,000 and he owned personal property worth $700. Besides James (45) and Eliza (Elizabeth, 39), the family included: John, Robert, David, Julia and Martha.3
A daughter Harriet was born in the mid 1860s; son John married in 1876.
James and Elizabeth may have had another daughter, Jane E. Campbell, born abt 1851 (died 1854). It is also possible she was the child of Col. James Lafayette Franklin Campbell and Rosannah E. McConnell. However, Col. Campbell typically included the "F" in his middle name to distinguish himself from James L. Campbell; Jane's death register entry listed her has the daughter of James L. and Eliza Campbell.5
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  James and Eliza's 1880 household included daughters Julia, Martha and Harriet as well as son David with his wife Mary and their 2 year old son Robert.6
David's wife Mary died at some point after the census was recorded; David remarried in 1885 but died in 1892.
Cens-190011 Jun 1900  Hence, at the turn of the century 85 year old James and 78 year old Eliza were the heads of a household that included daughter Julia (43), daughter Harriet (33) and two grandchildren: Robert Goodson Campbell (22) and Susan V. Campbell (19). The 1900 census asked each woman how many children she had given birth to and how many were living. Eliza's entry stated that she was the mother of 7 children with 5 living.7
Only 6 children have been identified through census records, suggesting an additional child (probably Jane mentioned above) was born and died between census years.
Religion Eliza and James were charter members of Bethel Presbyterian Church when it was formally organized in July 1881. They had no doubt worshipped at the church prior to its formal separation from the congregation at Rock Spring Presbyterian Church.4
Burial She was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2
Death12 Sep 1904 Eliza died on 12 Sep 1904 at age 82.2
