John Hutton1

b. 22 January 1736, d. before 20 June 1809
FatherEdward Hutton2
Birth22 Jan 1736 John Hutton was born on 22 Jan 1736.3,4
Childhood  John and his siblings probably spent their early years in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In the late 1840s the family moved further west, settling in York (now Adams) County.5
Marriage John married Jane Dickson, daughter of William Dickson.6
Residence  The couple were members of Christ Protestant Episcopal Church in York County. Their eldest child, daughter Eleanor, was christened in the church on 1 Nov. 1761 and John served on the church vestry in 1761, 62 and 1770. He also appeared in York County tax rolls from 1762 through the early 1780s.7,8
Migration  In the early to mid 1780s John, Jane and their children migrated south into Washington County, Virginia. This was a migration pattern followed by many of their York Co. neighbors. John's brother James and his family also made the move.
Land-Buy  John first settled the family on 106 acres of land he acquired from Humphrey Baker in May 1786 on Stalnaker's Creek [the creek is now known as Hutton Creek]. Two years later he purchased the rest of Baker's 430 acre tract. John was granted 2 neighboring tracts by patent in December 1792. One parcel totaled 50 acres; the other 129 acres.9,10,11,12
Land-Sell  John and Jane did not keep the majority of their 430 acre Hutton Creek tract. In Jan. 1790 they sold 152 acres from the northern end to William Dixon [Jane's brother] for 200 pounds. Four years later John divided the remaining land into 3 parcels. He and Jane sold two of them to John and Edward Hutton [their sons]. They kept the third parcel. John and Jane sold their adjoining 129 acre tract to Leonard Hutton.13,14 [also their son]
Land-Buy20 Oct 1795  However John was not finished helping his sons settle on their own land. On 20 Oct. 1795 John purchased 177 acres on Indian River from George and Margaret Gamble. As opposed to his Hutton Creek land, which sat slightly northeast of present day Glade Spring, the Indian River land sat to it's southwest. John's Indian River land sat near acreage his brother James purchased in 1785.15
John and Jane's son Leonard sold his 129 acres on Hutton Creek to his brother James on 21 March 1797 for $1.
Land-Sell17 Aug 1797  Six months later John and Jean [Jane] sold their 177 acres on Indian Run to Leonard.16
Land-Sell10 Oct 1797  They also sold William Dixon a small 27 acre tract of John's 50 acre Hutton Creek patent that had not been included in John's previous sales to his sons.17
Will23 Feb 1808  John's will, written on Feb. 23, 1808, was brief. He left his remaining land [the 106 acres on Hutton Creek he had not previously disposed of, and on which he and Jane probably lived], farming utinsels, farm animals and several other items to his son Dickson. The remaining property was to be appraised and sold with the proceeds divided equally among John's daughters Ellenor, Ann, Margaret and the children of John's deceased daughters Jane and Mary. Two months later John added specific requests as to the disposal of his clothing. He left specific items to the following people: Leonard Hutton's son John, daughter Margaret Snodgrass, daughter-in-law Jane Hatton, two granddaughters and to sons James and Dickson Hatton. He also mentioned Maty [or Mary] and Jane, but it is not clear from the phrasing of the will if those were the names of the two granddaughters.18
Deathbefore 20 Jun 1809 John died before 20 Jun 1809 on which date his will was proved at court in Washington County, Virginia.18

Research Comment:

When John and Jane purchased their Indian River property in 1795 the surveyor erred in not including a 15 acre finger of land. The error had not been discovered when John and Jane sold the land to son Leonard in 1797. In 1810 John's heirs signed a release relinquishing their claim on the 15 acres in favor of Leonard. The document identifies John's heirs as: John Hatton, Edward Hatton, James Hatton, James Buchanan [widow of John's daughter Mary], Dickson Hatton, Joseph Snodgrass [husband of Ann Hutton], Ann [Hutton] Snodgrass, John Snodgrass [husband of Margaret Hutton], Margaret [Hutton] Snodgrass and Eleanor Hatton.19

Since the information re John's parents is now known to be incorrect, it follows that the 12 Mar 1740 date is also incorrect.
