MotherJane Dickson1 d. bef 23 Feb 1808
Birth13 Aug 1772 Edward Hutton was born on 13 Aug 1772 in Pennsylvania.1
Migration  Edward's father, John Hutton, moved his family from Tyrone township in York County, Pennsylvania, to Washington County, Virginia in the mid 1780s, probably around 1785.4
Beginning in the spring of 1786 John Hutton acquired a large tract of land on what was then known as Stalnaker's (later Baker and Thompson, now Hutton) Creek.
Marriagebefore 3 Apr 1794 Edward married first Frances Hayter, daughter of Abraham Hayter, before 3 Apr 1794 in Washington County, Virginia.5,6
Land-Buy18 Feb 1794  On February 18th, 1794 John sold 3 of his sons, including Edward, a portion of this land. Edward received 134 acres for which he paid his father 30 pounds.7
Cens-18101810  The 1810 census listed the following members of Edward's household: 2 males 0-9; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 26-44 [/Edward]; 1 female 0-9; 1 female 10-15; 1 female 16-25 and 1 female 26-44 [Frances]. The household also included 3 slaves.8
Cens-18201820  Frances appears to have died prior to 1820 as no female of an appropriate age is listed in Edward's 1820 household. The census entry indicates an additional daughter may have been born after 1810. One older daughter was still at home, as were 2 sons. The full enumeration includes: 1 male 16-18; 2 males 16-25 [incudes 1 male from 16-18 column]; 1 male 45+; 1 female 0-9; 1 female 10-15, and four slaves.9
Land-Buy24 Sep 1820  Edward expanded his holdings in Washington County in 1820. He purchased 153 acres encompassing much of present day Glade Spring from James and Esther Beattie for $1,500.10
Marriage25 Sep 1824 At the age of fifty-two, on 25 Sep 1824, Edward Hutton married Sarah Porterfield, daughter of John Porterfield and Elizabeth Kincannon. She was thirty-seven.11
Land-Sell1830  Edward and Sarah lived on Edward's tract on Hutton Creek; it appears Edward's son John lived on the land Edward purchased from James Beattie. When Edward and Sarah sold that tract to William B. Allison for $1,340 on Oct. 11, 1830, the deed noted that "John Hutton, son of Edward, resided on the land."12
Cens-18301830  Edward and Sarah's 1830 household included 2 males under 5 which would indicate the presence of their young sons Arthur and Francis. Besides Edward [50-59] and Sarah [40-49], the household included a female age 20-29.13 [an unmarried daughter from Edward's first marriage??]
Widowed8 Jul 1839  Sarah died on July 8, 1839.
Will30 Jul 1839 Three weeks later Edward wrote a will leaving the bulk of his estate, including the "plantation" on which he lived, to the couple's sons Francis and Arthur, noting that he had already left his sons John and Edward, and his daughter Susannah Bishop all that he intended to. He left the children of his daughter Jane Hubble $400, his granddaughter Fanny Hutton $400, and his daughter Polly Buchanan $350. Edward appointed "his friend" James Porterfield as his executor.14
Death8 Oct 1839 Edward died on 8 Oct 1839 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 67.15
Will-Recd28 Oct 1839 His will was recorded on 28 Oct 1839.16
Religion  Edward was an ardent member of the Presbyterian Church. Though no stone has been identified to mark his grave, he was probably buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery.17

Research Comment:

Edward's will directly clarifies the names of 4 sons (John, Edward, Francis and Arthur) and 3 daughters (Jane, Polly and Susannah). It also indirectly proves the name of a 5th son, Abraham. Abraham died in 1820 leaving the daughter Frances, or "Fanny" named in Edward's will. However, the 1810 census suggests Edward had an additional son from his first marriage.

Portrait and Biographical Record of Montgomery, Parke and Fountain Counties, Indiana (1893) includes an entry for Edward's son, Edward. The entry states that Edward Hutton [Sr.] and Ellen [sic] Haighter were the parents of: John, Abraham, William, Edward, Mary A. and Francis. The entry is inaccurate in that Francis was a child of Edward's second marriage. Also Edward and Frances' daughter Jane was omitted from the list.

However, the inclusion of a son named William on the list merits further research. The 1830 census for Washington Co. includes an entry for a 30-40 year old William Hutton. He was listed two lines from Edward. William appears to be married and have several children. Who is this William? If he was Edward's son why wasn't he mentioned in his will? Some researchers have suggested William may have married Eleanor/Ellen Hayter. Note that the biographical entry for Edward above erroneously reports his mother's name as Eleanor (it was Frances) Hayter. Researchers have also suggested this William may have been the son of Edward's brother John.

Some Ancestry.com user websites list a son James among Edward and Frances Hutton's children. However the entries are unsourced and I have found no evidence to support this assertion.18,3

This deed, dated 8 Nov. 1810 and recorded 21 Nov. 1810, contained a release of interest in 15 acres of land signed by 8 of John Hutton's children (and/or their husbands) in favor of their brother Leonard. John Hutton purchased a tract of land in 1795 from George Gamble and then sold it to Leonard in 1797. Later it was discovered that the original surveyor mistakenly omitted a 15 acre section of the tract from his survey.

[S2758] Research of Bob and Donna Jean Ford, Aptos, California; Mr. Ford evaluated the York Co., PA tax lists and found that John Hutton appeared on the tax rolls in 1782 but not in 1785 or later. Mr. Ford also noted that Descendants of John Simmons: 482 includes an entry from the records of Christ Church in Huntington Township (York, now Adams Co. PA) establishing that John Hutton of that parish moved to the Holstein in the State of Virignia.
  5. [S2390] William R. Wheeler, Minister's Returns 1785-1832 Washington Co., Virginia Vol. 1A, p. 20-21. The Edward Hutton to Frances Haytor marriage was entered on Rev. Nicholas Reagan's first list of marriages submitted to the Washington County Clerks on June 17, 1794. None of the almost 100 marriages on the list were dated. Therefore it is impossible to determine when Edward and Frances married from this record. Rev. Reagan was licensed to perform marriages in April 1788. The second list he submitted to the clerk included marriages beginning 3 April 1794. Therefore marriages on the first list probably occured between those two dates.
