BirthCircacirca 1780 Margaret Hutton was probably born in Pennsylvania circa 1780.4
Migration  In the early to mid 1780s Margaret's parents brought the family south into Washington County, Virginia. This was a migration pattern followed by many of their York Co. neighbors. Margaret's uncle James Hutton also made the move with his family.
Marriage2 Oct 1800 She married John Snodgrass, son of John Snodgrass, on 2 Oct 1800 in Washington County, Virginia.5,3
Margaret's sister Ann Hutton was already married to John's brother Joseph Snodgrass.
In 1786 John Snodgrass [Sr.] had purchased a large tract of land adjacent to the eastern boundary of the land Margaret's father owned. Hence Margaret and John [Jr.] grew up on neighboring properties. In August 1794 John Snodgrass Sr. deeded the northeast half of this land to John Jr.]'s brother Joseph. John Sr.'s will left the remainder of the land to John [Jr.]. Hence once they married, John and Margaret lived with her parents to their west, and John's brother Joseph (with Margaret's sister Ann) to their east.6,7,8
Widowedbefore 15 Sep 1818  John died before Sept. 15, 1818, at which time Moses Hutton was appointed to represent John's children's interest in his estate.9
Margaret remained on the family land where she raised her children. As they became adults several sold their interest in the land. In 1822 son Joseph sold his interest to Joseph Meek. In 1834 and 1837 son Moses and daughter Eleanor (with husband Isaac Hutton) sold their interests to their brothers John and Edward.10,11
Cens-18508 Aug 1850  Thirty two years after John's death Margaret was enumerated on the first census to identify all members of a household. She was 65. Two other adults were also present: Polly (46) [Margaret's daughter] and William Snodgrass (26).12
I have not identified William. He may have been a grandchild. Margaret's son John had a 14 year old William in his 1850 household; perhaps this was the same person.
At some point in the early 1850s Margaret's sons John and Edward apparently decided to move to Lee County (Virginia). In Feb. 1853 Edward and his wife Mary sold their 2/6 interest (Edward's 1/6 as well as half of his sister Eleanor's 1/6 share and half of his brother Moses' 1/6 share) to Philip B. Snapp for $1,800 and a two horse wagon.13
The following January, John, who had already moved to Lee County, sold his 2/6 interest to Philip Snapp for $1,800. The deed clarified that the tract had originally belonged to John's grandfather, John Snodgrass who had willed it to John's father, also a John Snodgrass.14
Dower30 Oct 1855  Margaret also executed a deed whereby for certain consideration she released 5/6th of her dower interest in the land. The remaining 1/6 dower interest she reserved for the benefit of her daughter Mary Snodgrass.15
Deathafter Sep 1870  Margaret died after Sept. 1870. She spent the last years of her life living with her son Edward and his family in White Shoals Township in Lee County. Margaret's 1870 census entry stated that she was 90 years old.16,4

John Hutton purchased a tract of land in 1795 from George Gamble and then sold it to Leonard in 1797. Later it was discovered that the original surveyor mistakenly omitted a 15 acre section of the tract from his survey.
