Research Comment:

John's 1810 household suggests the presence of John and Mary Ann as well as a son under 10 [John Jr.] and 5 daughters. However a male 16-25 is also indicated. John's will only named 1 of his children (John Jr.). Did John and Mary Ann have an older son born in the first years after their marriage?

  1. [S620] John Hutton will (1838), Washington Co., Virginia Will Book 8: 49. John's will, dated 2 Nov. 1838 and recorded 1 Dec. 1838 left his entire estate, both real and personal to his wife Mary Ann. John named his son John Hutton Jr. as his executor. The will was witnessed by John and Edward Snodgrass and Parker Smith.
  2. [S2152] Washington Co., Virginia Deed Book 4: 388. This deed, dated 8 Nov. 1810 and recorded 21 Nov. 1810, contained a release of interest in 15 acres of land signed by 8 of John Hutton's children (and/or their husbands) in favor of their brother Leonard. John Hutton purchased a tract of land in 1795 from George Gamble and then sold it to Leonard in 1797. Later it was discovered that the original surveyor mistakenly omitted a 15 acre section of the tract from his survey.

Nicholas Reagan's first list of marriages submitted to the Washington County Clerks on June 17, 1794. None of the almost 100 marriages on the list were dated. Therefore it is impossible to determine when John and Maryann married from this record. Rev. Reagan was licensed to perform marriages in April 1788. The second list he submitted to the clerk included marriages beginning 3 April 1794. Therefore marriages on the first list probably occured between those two dates.
