FatherJohn Hutton b. abt 5 Dec 1767, d. 8 Nov 1838
MotherMary Ann Cunningham2 b. abt 1772, d. 1 Jan 1849
BirthCircacirca 1812 Samuel C. Hutton was born circa 1812, probably in Washington County, Virginia.3
Cens-18301830  Samuel was probably the 15-19 year old male listed in his father's Washington County, Virginia household in 1830. A 15-19 year old female, who cannot be otherwise accounted for, was also present.4
Marriage He married Isabella Hutton, daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr
Fath-Death1838  Samuel's father died in 1838. His will left his entire estate to be distributed at the discretion of his wife Mary Ann.5
Cens-18401840  Samuel was enumerated as the head of a Washington County, Virginia household in 1840. The household included: 1 male under 5 [John]; 1 male 10-14 [Lilburn]; 2 males 20-29 [Samuel + ?]; 1 female under 5 [Mary Ellen]; 1 female 5-9 [Nancy E.]; 1 female 15-19 [probably Isabella's daughter Sarah Jane]; 1 female 20-29.6 [Isabella, although she was born abt 1807]
Moth-Death  Samuel's mother Mary Ann Hutton died in 1849. She had written her will in 1841. She left Samuel her undivided 1/9th interest in 130 acres in Poor Valley (Washington County) belonging to the heirs of her father, Wiliam Cunningham [Mary Ann may have sold this land herself in 1847]. She also remembered a granddaughter Susannah Hutton who has not been identified.7
Cens-185015 Jul 1850  Samuel and Isabella's 1850 census entry included Samuel (38), Isabella (43), Lilburn (21), Nancy E. (19), Mary E. (14), John A.P. (11), Rachel M. (9), James O. (7), Arthur D. (4), William A. (2) and Eliza R. (8). Samuel was a farmer however he did not own land.8
Cens-18608 Jul 1860  The 1860 household included Samuel and Isabella, Mary, John, Rachel, James, Arthur, William and Samuel, age 8. Rebecca Hutton, age 8 [18], was recorded last. Samuel was again listed as a farmer. Samuel's widowed sister Margaret Grinstead was enumerated as the adjacent household.9
Samuel and Isabella probably lived on - and farmed - Margaret Grinstead's land. Margaret inherited half of her parent's land on Hutton Creek from her mother Mary Ann. Margaret was widowed in 1851. She did not have children. Samuel and Isabella were enumerated adjacent to Margaret in 1860 and 1870. Samuel died in early 1880 and in June of that year Isabella was recorded adjacent to Margaret. Samuel was not shown as owning land himself in either 1860 or 1870; Margaret was. When Margaret wrote her will in 1890 she left her land to two of Samuel's daughters (Mary Ellen and Rachel) with the stipulation their mother Isabella be allowed to live on the farm.
Three of Samuel and Isabella's 5 sons (John, James and Arthur) served with Co. F of the 63rd Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. In addition, Lilburn Hutton [the 3 men's half-brother] served with the same unit. The 3 oldest men enlisted together on May 6, 1862. Arthur, the youngest of the 4, enlisted in Feb. 1864. All 4 survived the war although John was wounded in June 1864 and hospitalized in Georgia. He was later captured by Union forces in Tennessee. James and Lilburn were both wounded at Chickamauga. Following the war all 4 men established their own households.10,11,12,13
Cens-18707 Oct 1870  Hence the 1870 census enumeration for Samuel and Isabella's household included daughters Mary and Rachel, along with the couple's two youngest sons, William and Samuel. In addition, 27 year old Eliza R. Hutton was recorded at the end of the family entry.14
Land-Buy28 Apr 1874  In April 1874 Samuel and Isabella, along with Margaret Grinsted and Samuel's children, jointly purchased slightly over 11 acres in the vicinity of Margaret Grinsted's Hutton Creek property. The land had been part of the estate of Samuel Buchanan and was sold to them by John B. Harris [the son of Samuel's deceased daughter Elizabeth Harris] for $165. The wording of the deed stipulated that the land was deeded to Margaret Grinstead for her life, and at her death, unto Samuel C. Hutton and Isabella, his wife, for their joint lives, and at their deaths, unto the children of Samuel C. Hutton.15
Will19 Jan 1880  Samuel wrote his will in early January 1880. He mentioned his wife Isabela and "the family" but the only child he specifically mentioned was his son John A. P. Hutton, who was named executor. Joseph S. Hutton, James L. Walden and James D. Hutton witnessed the will.1
DeathFeb 1880 Samuel died in Feb 1880 in Washington County.16

Research Comment:

A Washington Co. Chancery case located in March 2012 (J.L. Walden et als vs J.O. Hutton, adm et als) casts an interesting perspective on Samuel and Isabella's household. Combined with Isabella's will, it clarifies that Isabella was the mother of a daughter, Sarah Jane, prior to her marriage to Samuel. Sarah Jane Hutton married Lewis Walden in 1849 telling us either Isabella had Sarah Jane out-of-wedlock or she married a Hutton, had Sarah Jane (and possibly Lilburn Hutton), was widowed and then married Samuel Hutton.

The case also clarifies that Lilburn Logan Hutton was a half brother to Samuel and Isabella's children Mary Ellen, John, Rachel, James, Arthur, William and Samuel Hutton (Nancy E. Hutton was not mentioned at all and was probably deceased). Unfortunately, the case does not tell us if Lilburn was Samuel's son OR Isabella's son - he cannot have been both. If Lilburn was Samuel's son Samuel must have had a first marriage, been widowed and then married Isabella who was already the mother of Sarah Jane Hutton. Samuel appears to have been recorded in his father's household in 1830; a 15-20 year old female who does not appear to be one of Samuel's sisters was also present.17
